It’s almost fun to watch people who think shorts are appropriate to hike in. Then they have to push through brush and learn why most of us hikers wear pants and boots…

Oh, for the days when a kid could sit in the 2nd-row seat of an Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser and see the entire leaf display by looking up through the tinted skylight!
I know – I’ve owned three ’69 Vista Cruisers (the same year Eric had on "That ’70s Show) since 1982.

Where I come from, we have these things called “trails,” so you don’t have to push through the brush.

Hated the slow-moving weekend tour buses of downstate whiners and kvetchers. (“Mabel! I TOLD you we should have done this last week! The man on the morning news said the leaves peaked three days ago!”) All this while the trees are still exploding in golds and reds with the occasional pink thrown in for good measure. Eh, at least they ate in the restaurants and bought antiques. Every year. It was just getting stuck behind six of them on an ess-y two-lane mountain road.

The eastern sierra is pretty open with great trails and more aspens than brush, shorts are in order on warm summer days.

Unless you are the Crocodile Hunter! Was watching him last night. Amazing man. Anyway, my dad wouldn’t let us out in the woods without long pants and high top shoes. Hated them. lol Happy weekend all.

Now with Lyme disease all over the place, hiking in the woods may be a bad idea.

For that matter, don’t go hiking in hiking boots until they are well broken in and you are wearing two pairs of athletic socks. Your feet will break down before your shoes are broken in.

It depends on where you are and what the trail is like. Where I live, you can avoid most of the scratchy stuff because the trails are maintained. And the only areas with tick issues are areas where you would not be brushing up against anything anyway. So what if my legs get a few small scratches? Better than overheating in jeans

“Long pants” does not necessarily mean “jeans.” Ever heard of LL Bean or REI? It’s always a good idea to dress for the occasion whether hiking or whatever.

As far as kids having a good view from the back seat, the recent automotive trend of higher “beltlines,” with the windows curving up toward the back of the car, means that it’s harder for back seat passengers, especially shorter ones, to have a good view out the window. It’s an automotive style trend that I hope will go away, along with the lack of bumpers.
