Suspects include the Smith Brothers, the Halls, and assorted fisherman’s friends.

The Smith Brothers started to make “cough candy” around 1850 or so. It was later called “cough drops.”

They started putting them into boxes in 1872.

If Frank and Ernest are supposed to be in the historical Old West, then it was too early for Hall’s Cough Drops. But, not too soon for Smith Brothers’ Cough Drops.

I like Ernest’s pun in the strip.

He could have said horsehound thief (as a play on horehound) since some people have used horehound candy as cough drops.

Yeah, come to think of it, “horsehound thief” is much funnier than the original.

If they had also taken Viagra, the sheriff could be looking for a gang of hardened criminals…
