I use red wine and think of it a “brain wash”

I use scotch and think of it as braino (sic); if alcohol kills brain cells, it’s only the weak ones.

Yeah, and the weak ones just get in the way when you’re doing heavy thinking.

I’ve heard that we only use about 10% of our brains’ capacity

Dos that mean we can kill off all the brain cells that we want to as long as we are careful about which ones we kill?

My dentist used a combination of hypnosis and Novocaine. He called it “Trance and Dental Medication”.

Snopes pretty much puts that old canard to rest. How about this? And if that’s not enough, there’s all of these search results.

As Snopes said, “What part don’t you use?”

I’d agree with runar. Consider this: brain cells are incredibly “expensive” to run—“Although the brain represents only 2% of the body weight, it receives 15% of the cardiac output, 20% of total body oxygen consumption, and 25% of total body glucose utilization.” (http://www.acnp.org/g4/gn401000064/ch064.html) More, these supplies cannot be interrupted for long at all without the brain cells dying.

    .

If we did only use 10%, we would be a lot more efficient if we just got rid of 80 or 90%, and we’d lose nothing important.

You’re quite right. It may be true that, at any given time, we are using a relatively small portion of our brain, but when you remember that different parts control different fuctions, you realize how it works and that most of the brain does get used at one time or another. Right now, I’m sitting and typing, so my eyes, hands and language centers are active. When I watch a TV show, my eyes and ears are active. Soon, I will make a trip to the store, where my language processing and hands will not be used much but my legs, now inactive, will be in use.

As it said in Snopes, you never hear a doctor say, “Well, the bullet hit him in the head, but it only damaged part of that 90% that isn’t used”.
