I’ve heard of MSG in Chinese food being like a knock-out drug, but never trytophan in turkey.

Trust me, it works.

it isn’t the trytophan that makes people sleepy. it is the massive amount of calories that one consumes in one seating. but, then again, we are society of fatties.

@vwdualnomand What a kind, thoughtful, considerate thing to say! Thank you! And Happy Thanksgiving to you, too!

My husband is allergic to tryptophan. Even the smell of cooking turkey closes his airways and makes him violently ill. We always have something else for Thanksgiving. This year we’re thinking about fish.

Mythbusters busted the “tryptophan makes you sleepy” on Sunday’s episode. It’s the overload of calories that makes you sluggish.

MSG isn’t a knockout. It causes headaches in some people.

I’m sorry your husband can’t enjoy a Turkey dinner, but now you have me craving a nice fish dinner.
I almost missed thanksgiving dinner one year in college because of fish. We were at a beach house in Nags Head, NC and I saw a school of blue fish comming up the shore and ran out with my pole to fish right as my family was sitting down. Was totally worth comming in and eating what was left over to have the thrill of throwing in a line into a school of blue in a feeding frenzy right off the shore.

I will have an empty stomach when I go to see my family for a nice meal. I’ll try not to eat too much.

Maybe it’s an allergy to poultry. I knew someone who was so allergic to anything connected to poultry that he couldn;t even eat anything made with yellow food dye ‘cause it’s made from egg yolks.

If Roger and Peter get to the food first, then there’s nothing left for the rest of the family.

Ah, the classic American response to criticism…get defensive, and then go to the other extreme altogether. The idea of finding some happy medium between the two never seems to occur to our adolescent society.
