I remember my mother attempting to dress me nice on the first day. I don’t recall it being this bad, but it wasn’t the most pleasant of experiences.

    Clothing is overrated.

How come I remember wearing what my parents bought me or what my brother had outgrown?

I remember my first day at private school (age 12) every girl (including me) wore plaid!

On the up side, it can only get better. I’m not much of an expert here, though, my mom has always had such GREAT taste in clothes that I let her pick things out for me in high school!

This is why a lot of schools have uniform policies now.

Yes indeed - let’s hear it for uniforms.

My mother often bought me pastel-colored shirts because I looked so pale – not realizing that I’m a pale Summer, not a Winter, in complexion. I had to wait until college to dress in colors that actually made me look good.

I was one of those boys who did not care what kind of clothes that I wore.
That is,until one year in High School I decided to wear what was trendy and fashionable.
That was the year all the girls suddenly noticed me.
I didn’t complain at the time, but how shallow is that?
I was the same guy, just with nicer clothes.

He couldn’t think to wear HIS t-shirt under MOM’s shirt, and then take the shirt off at school?

Did Morton Goldthwait grow up to be Bobcat Goldthwait? It would explain a lot.

I’m glad my parents never did that to me. They let me wear what I wanted, within reason. Never had to wear “special” clothes.

I kinda wish they’d had uniforms in my K-8 school. I was not allowed to wear what was trendy - at that time, blue-jeans. What I had to wear was definitely NOT trendy, and I got a fair bit of grief for it.

As Doctor Toon says, kids can be shallow.

As a good little communist, I showed my solidarity with the working class, with basic blue JCPenny’s work shirts & bluejeans.
Now & then, as a joke on “trendy,” I’d go with red plaid corderoy bellbottoms & platform shoes. “Trendy” was a pretty funny joke in the ’70s. (Nobody got it.)
Think how they’ll feel, in their 50s, about pictures of their boxers showing. In my day saggin’ meant poverty. You hadn’t grown into big brother’s pants yet.

My sons never had new clothes just because it was the start of a new school year. But then, with homeschooling, a pair of shorts, maybe a tank top were their everyday attire at home. They had their favorites made out of camo mesh fabric that they wore constantly (they had more than one set so I could wash them), so I referred to them as our “school uniforms”. Now that my oldest is in college, there is no way that he’ll allow Mom to dictate what he wears, although I still retain veto rights as long as he lives here. (Clothes I don’t like can always get lost in the laundry process…)

Peter’s and Morton’s matching outfits remind me of the video jacket of the Schwartzenegger/DeVito film “Twins.”

I never did this with my kids. I let them help me pick their clothes for school. Neither could wear hand me downs. Boy oldest then girl.
Where as my sister and I (female) my mom was too tight was born in the depression era it was garage sale clothes that where way outdated and ridcule at school.
