Learning disability…the PC way of saying a kid is dumb.

Exactly. A learning disability doesn’t necessarily mean their dumb or anything like that. Just that the traditional means of teaching isn’t enough for said kid. I’ve met people who have learning disabilities who are quite intelligent, and some who I can safely say are now smarter than I am.

I’m calling BS. It’s not PC to start off with – it’s just more accurate. It was dumb to write kids off when they couldn’t learn the same way as others – as if everyone were the same. Kids with learning disabilities can be very smart; they just need to find the way they can learn best.

Of course that is NOT what it means…it means that the individual learns differently from the majority; that the same generic instructional strategies don’t work the same way; that teachers have to actually get to know that student. And, sometimes, it means that since the teacher can’t figure the student out, the school pretends that it is the student’s need rather than an instructional problem.

Yes…and when the school can’t or won’t….they too often pretend it is the student’s failure rather than their own. Definitely not all schools since many do a wonderful job…others, however, do not and blame the student instead.

I disagree, and calling that hogwash. Not evey kid is going to learn the same way. The sooner the a kid gets help with the known learning disability he or she has the better it will be for him or her.
