They vote, burn the ballots, add a chemical for black smoke-no Pope elected, or white-We have a Pope. But they’d have to be on another bunch of chemicals to elect an American as Pope. That isn’t going to happen.

Not quite, unless you’re going to be a real hairpin and consider dihydrogen monoxide a chemical, but in these days when exhaled breath is labeled a pollutant, I guess anything is possible.

The ballots are burnt on a pile of straw, and for black smoke they simply dampen it a little so it doesn’t burn quickly & cleanly and gives off black smoke. Dry straw yields white smoke.

I can remember one papal election when there was confusion because the smoke was the wrong colour. I think it was the election of John XXIII.

I would NOT call that smell ‘potpourri.’ I’d call it BOVINE EXCREMENT ………….

“Popery” and smoke! A double zinger today. Well done.

Potpourri is pronounced popery. Sounds like electing a new Pope.

Potpourri smells better than Popery any day. Who will they vote for and how long will it take? Only time will tell and it isn’t telling.

If only the next one would take the name George Ringo I, I’d be happy.

I cannot go in shops that sell Potpourri or scented candles as I have a super strong sense of smell and my nose picks up all of the scents at the same time, too over powering for me.

Actually, I think the confusion reigned at the election of John Paul II. That was when they even threw smoke grenades into the furnace to try to get white smoke to come out. Historically they’ve used the damp straw trick; but these days I think they’re planning on enhancing the burn a bit.

Similar things may have happened more than once. The incident I have in mind predated John Paul II by quite a few years. It was either John XXIII or Paul VI.

Well, they certainly seem to have fixed the smoke problem . . . .
