   Hint: most people take the 10 commandments out of context and miss the point that they are about a complete change of life still and not following a set of 10 rules. It is not about obeying rules but about living differently from the success oriented, blaming others, greedy, self-centered, etc. values of the world that we currently live in. It is about carrying for the powerless, the homeless, the poor, the sick, the hungry and all others who are blocked by our society from taking care of themselves.

   I think Jesus summed it all up quite well in Matthew 22:

   35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked Him a question, tempting Him, and saying,

   36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?

   37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

   38 This is the first and great commandment.

   39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

   40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. (KJV)

   In Romans 13:8, Paul said:

   Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.

   In Romans 13:10, Paul said:

   Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

   Galatians 5:14 builds on the same theme:

   For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

   Even James said: (James 2:8)

   If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:

   It is sometimes amazing to track through on some of the more familiar Bible stories and see how so much emotional upheaval resulted when someone broke what appears to be the simplest commandment - about not coveting what belongs to your neighbor - or brother. For example, Joseph’s brothers coveted the warm relationship with their father which was evidenced by Joseph’s coat of many colors. So Joseph’s brothers conspired to do away with him. Only at the last minute did the brothers let their greed get the better of them - and decided to sell Joseph into slavery in Egypty instead. When Joseph’s brothers met Joseph many years later, Joseph first determined that his brothers had sincerely repented of their misdeeds - then Joseph let his brothers know that he had forgiven all of their misdeeds.

   The importance of the Commandments is that the commandments convict everyone of the fact that all human beings are imperfect and, therefore, could never successfully “work” their way to heaven - even by keeping 10 simple commandments.. Only faith in the free gift of salvation offered by the Heavenly Father can save.

   Romans 3:20-26

   20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in His sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

   21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;

   22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe – for there is no difference:

   23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

   24 Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

   25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in His blood, to declare His righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

   26 To declare, I say, at this time His righteousness: that He might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

   Ephesians 2:8-9

   8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

   9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
