In September of 1991, Mike Morgan began drawing For Heaven’s Sake!, a comic strip published in the religion section of The Macon Telegraph. The weekly cartoon celebrates the faith and pokes fun at the foibles of the characters who make up the congregation of "Mainline Memorial Church."

Nonsense. Being a secular nation make us great.

The original pledge did not ave that phrase in it. It went, “One nation, indivisible …” Also, neither Thomas Jefferson nor Ben Franklin were members of any church. Jefferson had a particularly nasty quote, in a letter written to Richard Price in 1789, when he wrote, “I concur with you strictly in your opinion of the comparative merits of atheism and demonism, and really see nothing but the latter in the being worshipped by many who think themselves Christians. ”

The interesting thing about the founding documents and the Pledge is that they allow you to choose who “God” is. They don’t even refer to God by a gender-specific pronoun, who or what we worship is left totally up to us (even Martha Stewart if you want). So if someone wants to remove any and all references to “God”, it means they want to erase the references to their own beliefs. Scary.

also keep in mind that the september 11 hijackers were true believers in some kind of god. how much of that bleeep is enough?

There is only one true God. Any other worship or faith is false and empty. Worship of the one true God and following his precepts is what made our country great and what can save us again. It is not, however, about groups of people, but individuals with a personal relationship with their Lord and Creator.

Sadly many Americans believe in the inalienable right to freedom of religion, but only as long as it’s the same religion as theirs!

All true, and here it comes, BUT, I was eleven years old when the pledge was changed. And I was sixteen going to an all girls school in Baltimore when a boy and his mother in a neighboring school began their quest to take prayer out of school. After that, all there was of any God in any of the public schools was the God in the Pledge. I was sad because I was of no faith and it was on of the few positive values in my life back then. Today, I read Mike Morgan because I want a strip which “celebrates the faith and pokes fun at the foibles of the characters who make up [any] congregation”. For Heaven’s Sakes, guys, just turn the page like you change channels, or drop the subscription. But let us who enjoy 1 strip out of 146 strips, enjoy it in peace. God bless.

I concider my relationship to god to be a private matter between me and her.

“Under God” was added in 1954 by Dwight D. Eisenhower, yet the Conservatives seem to believe this phrase has always been there.

Anybody saying this country was founded on religious principles really wasn’t paying attention in history class. It’s like saying that American television was founded on the principles of survivor. It wasn’t, that’s just silly, and it’s been overall a negative influence on our country.

Problem is that revisionist history to take out the religious principles started in the 1940’s, so very few of us were taught the full story.
Go to Wallbuilders.com and read the original documents.

The price of freedom of speech is that you have to allow people the freedom to say what they feel even if they don’t respect the right the rest of us have to disagree. I am not an American but even I know that America’s greatest strength is the deeply ingrained individuality of it’s people. People of faith who use their faith to do good works are the best exemplars of that faith. People of faith who use their faith to silence dissent and homogonize society to a single point of view do their faith, and the faith of others, a great disservice.

We didn’t even have a pledge until after the civil war and there are some who want to do away with the whole thing. It takes all kinds I guess and in America we have the right to be all kinds. I love this strip. So far I haven’t been in it, but I hope I’ll still like it at least, if I ever show up there.

The first amendment is first for a reason. We need freedom of press and religion to defend the rest. Unless of course you want to use the second amendment to defend the rest.

Would seem to me that it’s up to God whether or not our nation is under His care no matter how often we publicly proclaim it—or don’t.
It’s kinda like folks thinking that a “Christian” name tag is their key to the heavenlies. That ain’t so according to Jesus himself.
We really are an arrogant bunch of hypocrites when it comes to spiritual matters….religious, athiest or otherwise.
