LOL! Lizzie is going to rat out Michael because Elly is pulling her up on her feet to punish her if she doesn’t. That’s hilarious!

Back in 1985, the punishment was probably going to be a spanking. Since spanking is illegal in Canada since 2004, a modern version of the comic strip would have to do something different.

A good strong shaking with a very firm grip on the arm. Should be good for a few bruises, at least.

“spanking is illegal” – Even a swat on a well-diapered behind; the old attention-getter??

What I don’t understand is why Ellie is grabbing Elizabeth’s arm. Michael is the culprit, and he’s the one she should go after. IMHO, E. is just kind of an innocent bystander.

Elizabeth has a conundrum — either she rats out her brother or she refuses to answer her Mom’s question. She seems to have found a solution. Yes pointing will do just fine — this time.

….. I would have loved to have had some music training. We had a piano that I could play by ear, but I wasn’t allowed to use it. So that skill soon evaporated. I was always waiting for the time I could go back and play the piano, but by the time I was able to use the piano I was too old to remember how. But the time my mother was no longer standing sentry over the house and was dating other men, it was too late to learn. . .
…….Meanwhile my sister never got past the chopsticks phase of her piano lessons. But it was never about performance with my sister. No one cared how badly she played or did anything for that matter. It was about going to the stately mansion by the lake for lessons from the handsome upper class lady that my mother would swoon over. My mother had a thing for the piano lesson lady you could tell. She talked about her enough, with a thrill in her voice.

Typical. The alleged lady can’t get what she wants, so she resorts to violence against a child. Elly Patterson, you are SCUM!

Elizabeth just admitted that she knew where her brother is but wasn’t going to tell. That in and of itself deserves a little “talking to” at the very least.

Section 43 of the Criminal Code criminalizes violence against children if it exceeds “…what is reasonable under the circumstances.” Unfortunately, there is no agreement on meaning of the term “reasonable.” What one parent regards as an acceptable spanking technique, others might consider child abuse. Elly is out in public where her neighbors can see her, so if she decided to give Lizzie a swat in order to encourage her to rat out her brother’s location, a neighbor observing the situation could turn her in if they did not believe it was “reasonable”. By making the level of the spanking up to interpretation by the court, it effectively eliminates all spanking.

She’s not an innocent bystander. Willingly or not she’s taking Michael’s side, and she is the one who knows where he is. So Ellie is right on applying some pressure on her to divulge his location.
    -
How would she go after Michael without knowing where he is?
    -
Are you one of those who argue for the sake of arguing?
