    Obviously, yes, you stupid kids!

My mom, of 3 boys, gave up trying to keep us clean. It took puberty, and girls, to inspire us.

I love the innocence of small children. They truly want to do the right thing.

Elizabeth learned that from her friend Calvin. When he was ordered into the bathtub Calvin said “I obey the letter of the law, if not the spirit”. Then when his mom shouted “Let us hear some water running!” Calvin said “Nuts!” to himself and got out of the tub with all of his clothes still on!

My mother wanted my brother and I look as terrible as possible so she could score some sympathy points from who knows where. She just wanted to start trouble to create a commotion all the time. Anyway, for whole summers my brother and I didn’t get to take baths. We looked pretty filthy even when trying to stay clean. I took to washing my under arms in county park bathrooms with some bar soap brought from home.

So these 3 kids are standing there dumbfounded for some inexplicable reason. And from this you have to conclude that kids are just plain dumb and a lot of trouble to boot. Elly is a saint to put up with all this. What could the problem be that they wouldn’t know that they should turn the faucet on and wash their hands? Could it be that there is no patient, caring and interested adult in their lives? Could there be no parent willing to spend time explaining the use of water and soap and so forth? People apparently are not that important but it’s now recognized that dogs need socialization and training. So if dogs need training, why not kids?

Note filthy hand on the door frame while Lizzie asks the obvious question. That’s what Elly gets for making a “vague” request. (it’s the same way my kids thought, the diabolical little …..)

Sorry that you had a parent not interested in your health and welfare.
    -
But it is not the average case and it is hard to believe that Elly would not have already shown her kids how to wash their hands and told them why that was needed.

Sorry, didn’t mean that comment to come out so harsh. With more writing practice I might develop subtlety. But I just had to say something about the need for more time and training spent on kids, even if some parents would prefer to do something else.

This is a gag in a comic strip that Lynn thought was funny.

You can lead three horses to water, but you can’t make them think.
