    A week is awfully fast to expect John to arrange things. Might be a call to Mom.

    Lynn’s Notes

    Several librarians wrote to me to protest this storyline. Seems there are too many deserving people working in libraries with the right credentials to give an opportunity like this to a volunteer.

    A simple “no” would have been sufficient.

    If I were(and I stress were)anti-feminist right know would be a good time to label Elly a griping, whinning, self-serving ‘b_ _ _ _’ but since I’m not , I’ll say ‘you go girl’.

    The simple answer to those librarians should have been that Elly was not a volunteer, but had a paid position as was shown in these comic strips from last year:

    @TEMPLO S.U.D.

    “Why can’t that librarian go?”
    Boy, and I thought I was picky about details!
    (I’m sure Sue has to fill-in for someone who’s in hospital, who couldn’t complete a report that has to be presented to the city’s budget commission during the week of the workshop. Or something just as involved.)

    I think Lynn Johnston’s original plan was a little more risqué and provided a different motivation for Sue to get Elly out of town. Back when Sue the librarian originally appeared in the comic strip from 2013-03-27 the accompanying Lynn’s Notes said:
    -
    Lynn’s Notes: In order to inject a bit of jealousy between my two main characters, I showed John firing off a definite ogle in the direction of Elly’s shapely co-worker, Sue. I planned to take this farther and have something of a relationship evolve between John and Sue resulting in a serious exchange amongst all three. As in other attempts to show some “straying from the fold,” I lost my nerve and never continued with the storyline.
