I guess this is payback for all those comic strips where Jean joked about how she was working for Elly on the side, but this sort of thing would get John sued today.

Give her an extra fiver and tell her to get one for herself while she’s out. Show a little sensitivity, dude.

I remember the day I was told I couldn’t joke around with a co-worker of the opposite sex because it could be misconstrued as harassment. (and there were no under-tones of ANY sort) I replied: HUH???

I remember those days too. It was not whether you intended harassment, but whether the other person perceived it to be harassment. I also remember the target was not workers of the opposite sex, but women in particular. “Women are more sensitive than men and special consideration must be given.”
    -
Personally I thought it was silly to expect to be treated the same in the workplace as men, and then lay this on them. I thought it was nonsense until I complimented a coworker on some jewelry she was wearing and she laid the harassment charge in my direction. I always liked when I got compliments on something I was wearing, but she was of a different mind. Fortunately, saner minds prevailed and nothing came of it, except my staying far, far away from this overly sensitive person. Why wear jewelry if you don’t want people to notice it?

Just once John stop being such a jerk! Buy it yourself! Idiot didn’t even say he’d give her the money for it, he expects her to waste her lunch hour buying something for his wife which he may or may not reimburse her for. Poor Elly stuck with such an insensitive jerk.

Do you really think it gets you off the hook for stupid and insensitive comments if you call us “haters” ahead of time? I can see you sitting there at your computer screen waiting for everyone to start flaming your direction and laughing at the fact that you have labelled everyone who disagrees as the bad guy. Guess what. It doesn’t work. Everyone here knows who the insensitive jerk is, and no amount of preemptive name calling will change that.

First, for this particular comic: the character ‘Jean’ is a dental assistant, not a secretary. But either way, any person hired by any business these days has a job description.
    -
Presumably, the job description of a dental assistant deals with services provided to patients, and not running errands for the boss. Secretaries, unfortunately, may still find that their job description includes ‘incidental tasks as assigned by managers’, which ends up covering everything from picking up the boss’s dry cleaning and lunch to lying to his boss when he’s out on a date with his girlfriend. However, fewer and fewer businesses these days can afford to waste the time of paid staff with ‘errands’ of those kinds, since many businesses are still operating at lower staffing levels.

    -

Now, regarding your accusation that anyone who does not fall at your feet in admiration of your brilliant comment is, by your convoluted dislogic, a ‘hater’: Would you have yawped this comment about ‘Jean the secretary’ if the dental assistant had been equipped with a ‘Y’ chromosome?
    -
I think we all know the answer to that, mooncatrussia….

My dentist would never discuss anything personal with anyone else in the room, while he was working on me. That’s unprofessional in my book.

On advantage of looking like me, you don’t get much sexual harassment. In fact, the only time I did was from a boss’s secretary who not only thought she was in charge, but probably was.
