hsawirae, I wish this site had a “Like” button. Well, consider yourself liked.

Personally, I’m glad the site has no “Like” button. It forces you to think at least a little while making a comment, instead of simply clicking a button to mindlessly say “kewl”.

I was thinking of the current state of the economy.
There are plenty of people with degrees who are out of work.
Working at the dump probably pays better than flipping burgers somewhere.

My father was a chemical engineer and back in the 50s he said that dumps ought to employ chem majors to make sure different chemicals did not mix. He was right.

It goes “zip” when it moves, and “bop” when it stops…

Here it’s ok to say ‘go to college’ so why not ‘go to university’?

    " ‘. . . why not ‘go to university’?"

Because it’s one of the vagaries of our language, which has as many vagaries as fate.

If ‘go to university’ is Canadian, how does that translate into American?

At least the meaning is still CLEAR!!!!! The “good old U.S. of A.” has their own brand of English, as does Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and all the other Commonwealth nations. Why not comment on the different dialects in the "good old U.S. of A.?

One day we will not need a dump. … . We will need to build things to last ….
    -—————————
We can’t build things to last. Look at all the people you would put out of work because manufacturers couldn’t make extra money selling worthless replacements.

Technically a university is a group of colleges —i.e. college of engineering, college of medicine, college of education, etc., at a common location or leadership.

American kids will say, “I’m going to Big State U, and study something fancy sounding,” so they can get parental support. When the parent’s back is turned, and after flunking tests and assignments, they will quickly switch to something a lot easier and try to make a go of that. The public schools here don’t prepare you for anything but liberal arts – if you work hard.
