Well then don’t send him, Elly. He’ll be monitored by airline personnel and it will be a good lesson in independence, but if you don’t feel good about it, then don’t do it.

I’m sending my oldest off to sleep-away camp for the first time this year. She’s not sure about it, but I know it’ll be a good thing, so she’s going with a friend. I told her to try it once and see how it goes.

Ah, doing what is best for the kids, regardless of how you feel… priceless!

He’ll do fine. And he’ll have a good time at his grandparents’ house. It’s good they can afford to send him since Alberta is quite far from Ontario!

My mom had to send me away for health reasons the first time when I was 5. I was gone for 10 weeks. After that I went to summer camp every year for 2 weeks, and when I was 16 I went to live with a host family in the U.S. for a year (I’m German). My brother also was an exchange student in the U.S.
Don’t know how she did it, but I think she was very brave doing what was best for us, and we both benefitted immensely from those lessons of independence. I’ll always be grateful to my parents for putting up the courage and money to give us that opportunity!

I don’t know if I’d be able to do it, but then I’ve never been on a plane myself even though when I was little I had a grandma living in Seattle, WA while I lived in Ohio. My aunt who raised me visited her but I only saw her when she came to us, then eventually she lived with us.

the comic enlarging works for me and it’s about time that elly start giving Michael some responsibility only today I would be careful about letting him go anywhere alone to far s#&t happens

That’s great, Adele! Nice to read about good things that happened.

My daughter and I took one of her daughters to kindergarten on the first day. One woman had to have her daughter virtually taken from her arms, and she was whining about, “They took her away from me!” My daughter and I went to a restaurant and had a “Ding Dong, the Witch Is Dead” breakfast (commemorating school starting for all four kids – those in other schools rode the bus). Takes all kinds, I guess.

Sure Michael’s likely to “bungle something up”, but it’ll be okay. We all bungle things up now and then, but it’s seldom a big deal.

Parenting is a learning experience, and the only real training is what we received from our own parents. Elly can see Mike growing up and know that he is capable of handling himself, but there is always some uncertainty. John also knows this; he just doesn’t feel it in the same way that his wife does. But expressing this verbally isn’t as funny as Lynn’s graphical and witty humor gets it. And I seem to remember that Mike has a great time with his grandparents.
