Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

Typical of a girl to be more mature at that age than the boys.

I’m guessing none of them got invited to the wedding…

Ah, the memories from childhood….Michael did marry Deanna and Gordon and all those other school chums …laughing like donkeys…were indeed his friends throughout adult life. These types of embarrassing situations, horrible as they seem at the time, will increase their bonds as they age. They will all be laughing together in their 80’s at some senior’s centre in Smalltown, Canada.

Yes. Just like I asked a girl but she wanted someone else. Of course in one day everyone knew.

Actually Gordon (with his wife Tracy) was the one who stood up for Mike & Deanna at their first (secret) wedding.

re: night-gaunt
depends on the generation. I don’t doubt Boomer girls were more mature at that age.
GenX girls by comparison were trained in several doctrines that set them up to fail, most notably “no consequences to actions.”

Ah the “joys” of being the first one to be caught liking someone of the opposite sex.

I think this is the sort of thing kids need to work out among themselves without adult intervention. A lot of ‘trauma’ is actually manufactured by ‘experts’.

Lynn’s Notes:
Writing a series of strips about Valentine’s Day brought back so many memories. In grade two, my girlfriends and I thought the boys in our grade were SO immature!
