Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

Sometimes the work is its own reward. If it’s reward enough to put up with the people who expect you to work for nothing. ;)

Not according to John.
He STILL criticizes her cooking and housekeeping.

Lynn’s Notes:
I cannot stress enough how important it is to volunteer. My dad used to say, “You pay for an education, don’t you? Well, working for free is a great education!” It’s true. You learn new skills, meet new people, and gain respect for having done a job well — all for the personal rewards it brings AND for a good, credible, enthusiastic reference. Sounds corny, but every good job I have ever had was granted to me because I was recommended by someone for whom I had worked for free!

This is why internships don’t pay in money. The idea is that the experience you get compensates you and gives you a boost in finding a paying job later.

I’ve always been of the opinion that the place you work for should at least cover your travel expenses. Otherwise you’re not working for free, you’re PAYING to work because you’re paying for your gas!

I feel if people don’t pay something for a service it’s not valued enough.

She’s so happy. I wonder if he’ll shoot her down with some cruel comment. My DH would say, “It will put us in a higher tax bracket, so you’ll won’t be making enough to make it worthwhile”.

I went through an internship for only so many hours sad to say I went to wrong place, I paid for the internship and got me no where, did not get me a job. Free labor most employers do not consider. So I disagree with this strip. I know only a comic strip. I know of another young woman when she was in HS did volunteer work at their local library and tried to get hired on and library turned her down and hired someone who did not volunteer. This young woman then went to AirForce training and is working for them.

A lot of people getting paid actually works for nothing. They would enjoy it more, if they were working for something.
