Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

Ellie, Ellie, Ellie…you’re already a tubby housewife! Why add ‘dork’, too??
Night-Gaunt49 said, 5 months ago
Got’em though Ellie looks in better shape than John.

Yes, she does but that outfit distracts you attention. Is Elle,
anorexic(sp)? She looks fine to me.

@IndyMan
Go back a couple of days and see how flabby she really is. Her outfit here is tight and holds that flab in.
.
John isn’t really overweight, just a little belly fat. His problem is no upper body muscle; he does need to work out a lot with free weights. He looks just like me several years ago.

I think they’re both fine, weight-wise. Anyone who is cracking on either one of them needs to realize that these are drawings and will vary from day to day, and if they look at a picture of themselves will realize that they look just like Elly or John.
But some exercise is always good for anyone. Too bad John won’t even go.

She better get a different outfit. No one wears that junk to the gym. But it would’ve been better if John joined with her and they both got fit.

Lynn’s Notes:
The truth of it was that we were all in pretty good shape. We walked to wherever we needed to go. We cut and piled firewood, we added to and repaired our own homes, we gardened, and in general, we worked hard. In the strip, I was imagining what it would be like to live in the city where I might have had more time to join a gym than my husband had. (Not that I would have actually joined a gym!)

C’mon, Cofyjunky lighten up!
She isn’t tubby, that’s normal middle-age spread. (I bet yer 6-pack abs are Coors.)
What she’s wearing wasn’t dorkwear – that was high style (or maybe you never saw that Olivia Newton-John picture posted a few days ago).

Ellie looks like she gained weight for the shopping trip. She looked much slimmer a couple of days ago.

I guess she got to John!

I wouldn’t wear that even in my house. Why put on something only to practically rip it off because the material made you itch after you start sweating. Shorts and a t-shirt are good enough.

@NightShade09
The style back then was pretty dorky. Olivia Newton-John just made it look good.

You don’t wear tight clothes to work out in. You would pass out. Those tights and leotard are very stretchy and wouldn’t hold anything in.
