Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

At least she didn’t ask the kids to exhale to know if it’s on their breath.

I doubt the plastic is good for Farley’s digestive system.

We never hung wrapped candy canes on the tree.

My dog once grabbed the cheese off a cheese and baloney sandwhich. My mom accused me because she knew I didn’t like baloney. When we realized it was our dog we found her behind the toilet bowl shivering like a monkey at the north pole with a piece of cheese hanging from her mouth.

I don’t like the taste of candy canes. We use them only for decoration and then give them away.

Have you tried Bob’s candy canes?

Run Farley!

I was wondering what happened to Farley, now I know, he’s been in hiding just waiting for the chance to snitch the candy canes. Who knew Farley liked peppermint?

Different season but once when we hid Easter Eggs outsides, about 6 of them couldn’t be found. Mystery solved when our boxer came running up with colored egg shells stuck to his jowels

Consider yourself caught Farley!

Lynn’s Notes:
The real Farley didn’t care much for candy, but he did like to chew stuff. Knowing he was not allowed near the Christmas tree, he would sneak across the floor like a stalking cat. Then, when he thought we weren’t looking, he’d bite chunks off the candy canes and spit them out. I bought plastic candy canes to replace the real ones, and these later (when we no longer had a pet) became part of a family tradition: when Aaron and Katie helped decorate the tree, the candy canes were plastic but on Christmas morning, they “magically” became real!

At least Farley only chewed; our cat Charlie Brown thinks Christmas tree pine needles (real or artificial) are a food group, despite the fact that he throws them up later. He never learns. This year, the tree is in the dining room which has “pocket doors” we can close when we can’t keep an eye on him. Merry Christmas, Lynn, and everyone!
