Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

Lynn, this stuff is just as good the second time around-actually, better because the past gives it such poignancy-it seems to have more impact on me 30 years later since hindsight gives me 20/20 vision.

This is the kind of thing my dad would have done for me and very often did. He was always there when I needed him and now he’s passed away I miss him so much. It’s wonderful this comic story is being shown in and around the 5th anniversary of his death (he literally dropped down dead of an aneurysm on Dec. 18th 2007) I love that the kids here have a dad as wonderful as I had. I hope that all of you who may read this do as well and if he is still with you hug him and tell him how much you love him and how much he means to you. You might not another chance to later. Happy Christmas xxx.

I knew John didn’t have it in him to let Michael suffer. Michael also learned to listen to his Dad but also what a parent will do for his child.

My dad passed in Nov. ‘2011. He was 87, so we had a lot of good years together. He was also the kind who would have replaced the angel in the middle of the night. Such a kind and thoughtful man. As an only child, he (and mom) spoiled me rotten, and I loved every minute. Most of all, though, it wasn’t the spoiling, but just having incredible parents to share it all with. Wow, I miss dad (and mom) so much, even today.

Christmas magic only works in December. Dad magic works year-round.

I wish I’d had a dad like that. No such luck. I love this strip.

I love the ending of this story. I just wish she would show John with some of that kindness to Elly.

Lynn’s Notes:
This was the kind of magic my dad would have performed; he was just like that.

Blessings to you, Susan. You need an angel. I hope you find one!

Dad overdid the guilt and it backfired?
