Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

They may be small and have lots of energy but no stamina. They poop out after a few hours and want sleep.

They pooped out because they were bored. Mom was the only one excited.

Lynn’s Notes:
My dad took us to the Hudson’s Bay store one year to see Santa. We were a bit too old to do the Santa thing, but this was something we felt we were doing for Dad. He was in a great mood and enthusiastically encouraged us to wait in a long line. As we stood there, he went on and on about the decorations and the scene in which Santa had been placed. I remember thinking that he was way more excited about this than we were. Eventually, Alan and I had our turns on Santa’s lap, were photographed, given a candy cane, and allowed to go. Dad was beaming, and on the bus heading home, he quizzed us about our Santa experience. “Well,” I said, “he was greasy and smelled like cigarettes and needed to use a toothbrush really badly.”
Alan added, “His beard wasn’t real and didn’t fit right, and I didn’t like the way he said ‘Ho, Ho, Ho’.” Dad looked out the window of the bus for a while and said little else about our trip to see the great Claus. When we got home, I overheard Dad talking to Mom about our excursion. As it turned out … the man who was dressed as Santa was a great pal of our dad’s!

Looks like Elly tried to infuse her (fake) enthusiasm into her kids.
With poor results.

This is going to be me if I ever have kids. I will be bubbling over with Xmas enthusiasm, wanting to see every window & decoration, & the kids will be jaded & bored.

My dad (rest in peace) used to tell me that Santa Claus and those other things stimulate a child’s imagination, and thus are very good. I think they stimulate our hearts, too.
Dad was right.

Why do you hate Elly so much? And if you get that annoyed at her all the time, why do you read the comic in the first place? I think the majority of people stop doing something optional if it bugs them.

20 years from now, (or even, in the case of my kids, 20 minutes after they get home!) they will probably remember these times as the best of their lives, and do the same to their children.
