Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

Elly looks dumbfounded in the last panel.
I’m wondering if she knows her child very well.

It’s moments like this that make it all worthwhile to be a parent. There are times when you want to tear your hair out, but the times when they make your heart melt make up for it.

It’s sweet Michael brought Farley his squeaky toy, so that when the vet kept Farley over night for observation he would have it to comfort him and …. Wait a minute! How did Michael know in advance that the vet would think Farley was so bad off he would need to be kept over night and need that squeaky toy? Hmm. It seems a little suspicious to me. I wonder if Michael knows a little bit more about exactly why it is that Farley is sick. That puts a whole new light on Michael’s concern for Farley dying from yesterday.

Michael’s just preparing himself for the worst news possible….in case he hears some from the vet. He brought the toy to partially deflect how scared he is.

Farley is a member of the family. Michael wants to treat him as such.

Very true. I had a “tear your hair out” day yesterday and I’m really hoping I have a “heart melting” day today to make up for it.

Having my cat stay overnight at the vet’s cost me several hundred dollars.

One of mine had a part time job above a pet shop. Every day the owner would let him go down and play with the puppies at lunch break. I asked don’t you feel bad that u can’t take them home. He said I feel if I can give them one hour of fun and happiness in their day I ve done something positive. I didn’t know he thought about things like that.

it is amazing how the little boy/girl that you thought lived for spiderman or spongebob suddenly grows up and has a very smart mind and a loving heart for others. You are blessed to have a son like that.

Pretty reasonable, considering it would cost a person tens of thousands to spend the night in the hospital.

Is it only in the USofA that we say, “in the hospital”? It seems that other English speakers say, “in hospital.” Just curious.
