Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

Another poor soul who’s never experienced a farm. Just because she’s never seen more of nature than her own little circle, doesn’t mean that’s all there is to it. There’s nothing like stepping barefoot into a warm cow paddy, or having a bull chase you, or slopping the hogs, or watching calves and piglets being born. These and more are experiences those kids will cherish for a lifetime……………or not.

Last family bull chase that I heard about, the bull only lead for the first half. Then the “chasee” came back out of the house with the shotgun and the bull became steaks and sausage.

Probably healthier to actually learn something about nature rather than the usual “ignore it completely, or worship it” that nature usually gets.

What the hell is that in Michael’s mouth in the last panel?
Kinda looks like a cigarette.

That’s probably a straw from a juice box – the second to last panel shows one.
Or it could be a Marlboro….

Sure! It won’t hurt them any, and will probably improve them.

Sausage comes from most any animal that can be ground up, mixed with spices and fillers (!), and stuffed into a casing…

Lynn’s Notes:
Friends in Hamilton were curious about our summer plans. They made jokes about my being a city slicker, but I was determined to learn how to be a good farm hand.
