Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

When I was Michael’s age I never packed for a trip; my mom always selected the things I needed for the trip.

I wonder if they resemble that “tanorexic” woman who was in the news recently.
She looks like an old piece of shoe leather!

Hey, don’t complain about the “Farmer/Fat Man” tan … I have a tan on my head, neck, and arms (from fingers to 2" above my elbows), and legs (around the knees to the sock line.)

I’m a cyclist, which give me NO room to comment on other’s tan lines!

Lynn’s Notes:
Auntie Bev and Uncle Danny were closely based on my sister and brother in-law, Beth and Don Cruikshank. They are both such wonderful characters, I hardly had to make anything up!

I always enjoy your references to Lynn’s notes. It’s like a “backstage” pass. :)

Here in Iowa its called a “farmers tan”. I usually get it on the left arm only while driving. A number of years ago I got a sun burn on the top of my head with the sun roof open. It even more likely now that there is less hair up there

I’ve got the same tan from doing all the mowing! 2" above elbow to hand and 4" above knee to ankles. Looks really strange when I have a bathing suit on. :)

That’s how I get sunburned. I’m real light skinned.

If you are tanning that means you are out in the sun too much. The body is rallying itself to keep from burning and the UV rays will eventually give you cancer and tanned leather skin. So fetching.
