Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

The only relatives of my stepmother I’ve not gotten to know are her brothers Raymond and Bryan (I’ve gotten to know her daughters, sons-in-law, grandchildren, brother Alan, sisters Diane & Doreen, parents, nieces/nephews, mother’s siblings, some cousins and distant cousins, two ex-husbands, and a son of the second ex-husband).

I had a great-aunt who ran a dairy farm, too. I remember going to visit one time when I was a teenager and learned the hard way that not all fences are barbed wire because some of them are electric. (I wanted real bad to get into the pen with the calves – never did make it.)

My mother, a former farm girl, had a saying when something stressful was going on: “Ain’t had so much fun since the hogs et my brother!”

Lynn’s Notes:
For three months one year, Rod and I worked on his sister and brother in-law’s farm. They grew grain and raised pigs and I quickly went from being a city girl to driving the combine, chasing piglets, and building bins. It was an extraordinary experience, and the farm became one of my favourite places to take the Pattersons!
