Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

Think of the advantages, John. You’ll have a room all to yourself.

Where does that buck-toothed conductor come from?
He looks like he sure could use John’s services.

Romettes are either you sleep sitting up like a recliner or the small bunk such as in the movie some like it hot. I love the way everyone try’s to blame John even when he didn’t do it. Why should he buy the tickets if she said she was going to. Then you would have been saying what a jerk he is that he doesn’t even trust his wife to buy tickets.

To me, the point is that John needs to shut his mouth and quit the blame game, and just deal with the current situation. It’s pointless for John to get upset with Elly over something that is done and can’t be changed. At this point, John should put on a happy face for the kids and turn this into an adventure rather than getting upset at Elly for something that seems to be a mistake. Now if Elly had done this on purpose, then maybe John should say something, but he should have gotten involved a while ago if this was a big deal to him. Finally, as my mother always says, “If you want something done the way you want it, then do it yourself!”

He’s just surprised and upset because he, like Elly, was expecting something better. He’s human. He’ll deal with it. It’ll bring the family closer together…

We always see Ellie doing the yelling, we should let John vent some steam today. He usually sets by quietly.

From http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/roomette?show=0&t=1311689343: Definition of ROOMETTE : a small private single room on a railroad sleeping car.
To me, the points are that people who encounter unexpected glitches at the beginning of a long-anticipated trip aren’t likely to be at their best, and that people who offer to micromanage them into behaving “correctly” should get a life.
