Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

Oh, the agony of the bag…
(Although, in truth, I don’t mind the pipes.)

I must be wacko because I love the sound of the pipes.

Me too, as long as they are well-played. There are too many that abuse those poor pipes.

I love them. “Scotland the Brave” is my favorite.

Some people hate the pipes; some people love them. Obviously, his assistant doesn’t; but she doesn’t have to listen to a trumpet half the night.

I love the trumpet and the pipes. Not together, though!

I play the trumpet. My brother used to play the pipes. They haven’t released my parents from their padded cells yet.

Hey! I resemble that remark!

I am fortunate enough to live in a neighborhood that thinks having a bagpiper down the block is a really neat thing. Couple years ago, I was out on the porch practicing for the St. Patrick’s Day Death March (four parades in two days, plus a pub crawl), and the president of the neighborhood association came up the sidewalk. I’m in trouble now, though I… but then he pulled two beers from his coat pockets and invited me to his St. Paddy’s Day party…

The most amazing part of this comic strip is that the dental patient has a smile on her face in the final panel. If my dentist were as distracted as Dr. (I never actually look in the patient’s mouth as I work) Patterson, I would be very nervous the whole time.

The sound of the pipes makes me sad, as I mostly hear at police and military funerals. Usually for much younger people;-(
