Wow, she got some words in edgewise. Wonder how long that will last.

Who cares whose parents they are? After that long ride with the grandchildren constantly bombarding them with information overload, they’re still smiling. Of course! They’re grandparents soaking in their grandchildrens’ experiences.

Well, it looks like it didn’t take long for the kids to warm up to their grandparents. The grandparents are on cloud nine because they’re the “celebrities” right now, and the kids get undivided attention. It’s all good.

(How long before someone mentions Lizzie in the front seat? 3, 2, 1…)

I think they’re Ellie’s parents. Anyway they look like her parents from the later strips.

Re: lightenup, it’s possible that Lizzie is in the middle of the back seat and leaning forward very much so between the bucket seat backs to the front of her. I’ve seen it first hand in my own car, when bringing my parents to my home from the train station. Come to think of it, my kids are about the same age is these in the strip.

According to Lynn’s comments, these are John’s parents, who will eventually be named Will and Carrie and are based off Lynn Johnston’s ex-husband Rod’s parents, Tom and Ruth Johnston who, oddly enough, lived in the same town as Lynn when these comic strips were originally done in 1981. In the early strips, the grandfather was called Vern. I am curious if Lynn Johnston will correct that name to Will when she gets around to reprinting those comic strips.

Thanks for the info on the change in July but a “pronouncement’ is “A formal expression of opinion; a judgment” or an “an authoritative statement”The info I gave wasn’t my opinion or made on my authority. Maybe you should learn the meaning of words before you use them and maybe they should update the site as that is where the information I gave is shown.. Cheers !

It’s so nice that everyone is enjoying these COMICS in the spirit in which they were intended.

“An authoritative announcement” (Webster’s definition) does not necessarily mean on your own authority. For instance, the White House press secretary makes “authoritative announcements” all the time, all of which are on the authority of someone else. Bill, you made an authoritative (albeit someone else’s authority) announcement about Lynn’s work out of the blue, with no lead-in from anything anyone else had written. That’s the very definition of a pronouncement. Fbofw.com (Lynn’s website) does have updated information. The video of her last new drawing has been posted there since last July.

Is Lynn’s “retirement” really a bonafide issue after such a long period in syndication, especially if we’re going to let things boil down to semantic debates?

Please - just enjoy one of the best strips ever produced.

and, by the way, I note a strong familial resemblance to John, and no so much resemblance to Ellie.

In this comic strip, the comic is for our amusement, while the comments are for our education. Where else can we find definitions for”pronouncement” and “authoritative announcement” all in one site?

Supposedly if that couple were John’s parents, why did John go with Elly and the kids to pick John’s parents at the airport? Apparently, John didn’t go with them, just waited at home till his parents arrived at their house. Sheeshh! Odd! sighhh! :-/
