Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

AAH! Lizzie’s talking! Noooo! She can’t be growing up that fast already! Lynn, why do you torment me so?!
masnadies said, 12 days ago
Sentences like “stop fighting up there” are learned very early. When you have a sibling, at least. Doesn’t mean she can say any complete sentence she wants.
My son (4 1/2) talks to my daughter (almost 3) like that sometimes. I wish I could save those moments somehow.

I just wish she’d stop calling herself Nizzie.

@ Macushlalondra - Don’t worry; soon enough Michael will be calling her Lizard Breath.

AW! Michael is being such a good big brother here. How sweet.
Re Lizzie referring to herself as “Nizzie” - the “L” sound, along with”R” is one of the last sounds that a child learning to speak learns to say. She’ll get it sooner rather than later.

hahaha royman - I like when he calls her Lizard Breath haha … it reminds me of my sister and I fighting and getting along as kids.

Michael shouldn’t tell her stories like that.
Everyone knows thunder is caused by Thor in his Goat drawn wagon as it flies through the sky.

I don’t know about that, Doctor Toon…my Dad used to say it was the angels moving furniture up in heaven, so you know that must be true…since my Dad said it and all…

Lizzie and Farley in the second panel are so cute! :-)

masnadies; you can’t save moments like that but pay attention to everyone as it comes along. Before you know it your son age 34 will be talking to your daughter age 32 and youll be wondering when did that happen.

I was told thunder was when GOD got a strike in bowling and lightning was when he got a gutter ball.

Lizzie’s talking AND she can understand complex concepts such as gods, war, and angels. Our little girl is growing up at an alarming rate.
Normally, Lynn Johnston does a Remembrance Day strip on the Sunday before Remembrance Day. I guess Lizzie’s anti-war statement is as close as we are going to get this year. I miss Grandpa Jim.

I was told thunder was God bowling. Interesting to see the different explainations.

I was told that thunder was wagons going over a wooden bridge in heaven.

Hmmmph… I was told thunder was the sound of lightning! (I had literal-minded parents…)

Lynn has done an accurate depiction of our weather for the last several days.

I was never told any wild tales about what causes lightning and thunder when there were storms.
Oh, we were taught to know the difference between fantasy and fact. No, we didn’t have boring childhoods. Our parents read and told fairy tales to us.
But, when I was in grade school and older, us children would lie on the bed and look out the windows to watch the storms and lightning.

Thanks, Joe.
I wish I could take my deceased WWII vet dad to the new Applebees in my hometown. I’ll be thinking of him, riding that big wagon in heaven over the wooden bridge.

I’ve always believed Lizzie was exceptionally bright–even gifted!
BTW, this IS a sweet strip today. Just Mike, Lizzie and Farley.
No John and/or Elly!

This shows the innocence of youth.

You are welcome, summerdog.
Mike’s description reminds me of the mother who asked her son what the lesson was about in Sunday School.
He gave a far-fetched tale of a modern military battle with Moses as the General of the Israelite Army.
When his mother asked him if that was they way that the teacher taught it, her son said, “Who would believe it happened the way she told it?”

masnadies, do you have a video camera? If not, you should get one now while your children are still this young because the biggest and best way you can hold on to those moments is to get them all on tape. It should always be charged up and ready to “go” so that when you see and hear your children having these little moments between them you can capture them on film. That way, you’ll be able to hold on to those memories forever — even after they’re all grown up with little ones of THEIR own!

That priceless look on Farley’s face reminds me of the look on MY dog’s face when we get a thunderstorm … right before she takes off to hide in our basement until it’s all over!!!!!

My parents always told us that thunder was the angels bowling and lightening was when an angel got a strike. It made me feel better. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest so rain didn’t even register. I still smile when a storm blows through and I remember that. We told my little niece that when we had a big storm here and she said, “There Funder’s out there!” So cute!

My mom told me, I from Kansas, her dad referred to thundar as tator wagon nothing about lighting though.
I’m not for sure for Veteran’s Day if Ryan’s/Hometown buffett is offering a free meal to all veterans but I think you have to have proff.
I agree it’s nice to see brother and sister getting along that won’t last long.

Applebees will acept a picture of you in uniform. Golden Corral is taking your word for it. Even with limited selections its still a great thing for them to do.
Joe Allen Doty said, 11 days ago
The picture ID card that I got from the Veterans Adminstration is proof enough from me in my opinion. But, Applebee’s doesn’t mention that.
Pictures of myself in my uniform are still packed in boxes.
While I do have a DD214 in the desk drawer here, I wouldn’t take that to a restaurant.
Quote in a a USA Today Nov. 5 ‘09 Article which I found in regard to Applebee’s:
“Although Applebee’s requests some kind of military ID, “We’re not going to argue with folks who might forget to bring it,” says Sam Rothschild, senior vice president of operations.”
