Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

That’s for taking his halloween candy, and he does it with a smile

How do you keep your kid from raiding the trash can for his thrown out Hallowe’en candy?
Put it in the neighbour’s trash can down the road.

That’s a shame.

but it wasn’t his candy it was his sister’s that he gave her.

What a long driveway. And shame on John for not taking out the trash like a good husband!

Little guys usually love to help, although it is a ton more work to let them they grow up to be better adults if you do.
@Macush; why is taking out the garbage a man’s chore? We share chores, whomever is in the best position to get one done when it needs doing does it. The house is clean enough, dishes done, pets fed, garbage, recycle & compostables taken care of…. We’re not so fond of gender specific jobs.

This reprint is the 15th one in the first collection, placing it roughly 2.5 weeks into the first year. This was before Lynn Johnston established that the Pattersons have the Nichols on one side of them and Mrs. Baird living on the other side of them and Connie Poirier living across the street from them. That’s why the long driveway and a neighbourhood that doesn’t look anything like it did in later comic strips.

I like howtheduck’s background info on the strips. Keep it up.
My first thought today was; hey, that’s not their house!

Yeah, sure he’s helping….helping make more work for her, and since she wont be as bored, technically, he’s helping her.

Next panel would show Elly screaming her head off at Michael.
Maybe it’s better that they live on such a large property. At least then she won’t be disturbing the neighbors.
BTW, next time she ought to buy Hefty Trash Bags.

LOL mroberts88 that’s one way of looking at it! xD
If she’d bought Hefty bags, then Michael might not have been able to carry all that trash in one go!
I think she was being a bit ambitious anyway thinking she was going to get those TWO big bags in that itty bitty can :o)

I’m with the rest of you. Where in the world did that house come from? It looks nothing like the one they moved out of so Michael and family could move in.

Avolunteer, I’m not into gender specific chores either but the garbage bag is usually heavy so it’s easier for a man. Like it’s easier for a man to do mow the grass and do yard work and work on the vehicles. It doesn’t look like John does diddly squat around there, the least he can do is take out the trash.

Open Wings, what type of help was never specified. I’m more interested in how she’ going to get one bag in.

Susan, trying leaving the house once in a while. Or the asylum if they let you.

rtt470, you dont have to be mean to everyone. I kinda pity you, if you have to come to an online comics website to talk down to people just to make yourself feel big.

Please show me where I am mean to “everyone”.
I have my family and friends to make me feel good about myself. I actually have self esteem. Thank You
