Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

Gee, he IS comfortable in his own skin! Talk about loud and proud :o)
Mind you, Elly might just rip him right out of that same skin if she cops an eyeful of his Macho Man… xD

My girl of two years cannot understand why my three year subscription to Maxim keeps coming.

I thought John was focused on his dentistry. Maybe it should have been “Playtooth”
@Fairportfan2 - I think it’s “Macho”, but I thought the same thing the first time I read it…. LOL!! :-))

Next she’ll be screaming, “John!”

Is that a guy with a mustache on the cover? If so, I have some concerns about John.

When you pull strips randomly for reprinting, you get all kinds of interesting and odd story combinations:

I do not like the way Lynn is portraying John. Was this particular strip in the original series?

Settle Down Girls!!!!
That Macho Man is a comic book character (I think). It’s not porn! Lynn is not portraying John in a bad light, and it is still a family strip. (she could have used a different comic book to avoid this confusion though.
And she really does emphasize Elly’s butt there!

Susan: From yesterday - if you are looking for failures in the Patterson family stories, how about Elizabeth and Erik where she exhibited the classic symptoms of an emotionally abused partner. Or Mike & Deanna’s relationship with the Kelpfroths which was never really resolved because the house burned down.
Susan001 said, 22 days ago
I don’t believe that Mike and Deanna ever desired to make any type of “relationship” with those horrid people. After all, they’re the ones who set the fire in the first place.
BTW, we never did learn their ultimate fates. Last I remember was that they were both in the hospital.
Re today’s strip, is that Mike in the cape and paper bag? Looks like an older kid.

John is brave to openly look at a Grily Mag with El that close by.

Shame on John looking at that trash. He should be seeing what his family is doing.
I don’ think that type of magizeen will be at a dentist office.

WRT gaebie who said:
That Macho Man is a comic book character (I think).
Today’s comic strip is on p. 20 of the “One-More-Washload Blue” collection. On p. 27 of the same collection, it shows John nibbling Elly’s neck as she does the dishes, and giving Elly a shoulder rub as she changes Lizzie’s nappy; to which Elly responds, “You’ve been into ‘those magazines’ again, haven’t you, John?” Somehow, I doubt that Macho Man is a comic book character.
summerdog said, 22 days ago
Oh, those are the girlie’s dark, open mouthed lips you are seeing on the magazine cover.
I know… it looks like she has a goatee and mustache.

John must really prefer sleeping on the couch…………..

well this is interesting… my listing shows I made a comment here…no comment here…was it deleted?

Did this strip actually appear the first time around, or is Lynn entering new ground as a man-hater? This just doesn’t match the John I remember at all.
I’m serious. I want to know if this is a new comic or not.

First - Yes this is a reprint.
second - yes that is a porno mag.
Third - there have been a handful of mags in the comic like that. The two that I can remember is when Mike was in high school he fell asleep with the lights on, his mom came in to tuck him in and realized what he had been reading. The second was at a magazine stand that John looked at one ELly caught him and he explained how all the women had dental issues. THey left with her rolling her eyes and the stand owner saying “I’ve been looking at these for years and I’ve never noticed any of them had teeth before.
This one reminds me of a Ray Romano improv, where he said “men do most of their imagining in the shower.”
