Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

Looking at that sweater and the way Michael Patterson’s hair seems to be slipping off his bald head in the final panel, I think it is clear in today’s strip, Charlie Brown has stepped in to play the part of Michael Patterson. It’s too bad his wig didn’t stay on though.

You can put half in the compost, and THEN you can start cleaning up the other half that’s lying in a pool at your feet!
Way to go Michael! Alas, I doubt you will look quite so cheerful in about 3 seconds flat, lol :o)

Wow, FBoFW is really reaching for replacements during the flu season.
Good morning all. The gucky stuff in a pumpkin doesnt smell good, however, Jack-O-Lanterns look good. It is early, but, happy halloween everyone.

Hahahahahh howtheduck well spotted! xD
I noticed the hair too (or lack of) but not the Charlie Brown thing; that’s funny :o)

Good ‘ol Charlie brown steps in while Mike Patterson has the flu eh?
Does Elly talk like CB’s adults? “wah wah wah”?
lightenup said, 24 days ago
LOL! Probably to Michael, his mom sounds like “wah wah wah”
Love the new look, “SkullyWings” :-)

Michael’s hair looks full in Panel 2. Hmmm…
pearlandpeach said, 24 days ago
notice Elly has glasses, suddenly. so , the last panel is new and what was the original?
csscougar said, 24 days ago
pearlandpeach: I actually don’t think they are glasses. I think her eyes just got that big and round out of shock and frustration.

You have to tell them everything. Why didn’t you provide a bowl for him to put the “gucky stuff” in? Now my grandma would’ve done something to that “gucky stuff” and made the best pumpkin pie on the planet.

Take the seeds out of the gucky stuff, salt them and roast them. MMMMM
mroberts88 said, 23 days ago
macush, the gucky stuff is in a pumpkin pie? Also, has anyone tried pumpkin pie ice cream? That stuff is good.

Actually, rather than Charlie Brown, Michael is looking more like Linus, I think. Which would make a certain amount of “Great Pumpkin” sense.

Macush:
You don’t use the gucky stuff in pumkin pie, you use the flesh of the pumpkin. Only thing the guck is good fr is seeds to roast. The stringy gooey stuff is gross.
mroberts88 said, 23 days ago
Kala, no, I’m not sayin lynn has the flu. It was a joke.
Susan001 said, 23 days ago
ROAST the seeds? Hell no! String them through a thread and make a nice pumpkin-seed necklace.
kfaatz925 said, 23 days ago
LOL! This is why young kids need directions for everything, before they start.
OpenWings said, 23 days ago
Hey FrightenUp… thanks! :o)
Hell what Susan001??? a necklace?!? At least roast them first before you make your necklace, then at least you can eat the thing afterwards! Waste not want not :o)

This message has nothing to do with today’s strip, but I feel I must address this issue:
One thing about FBOFW that has bothered me for years is the fact that the Pattersons and their friends ALWAYS succeeded at every venture they tried.
None of them have ever known failure; none have ever had to pull themselves up by the bootstraps and start all over.
I feel that this sends the wrong message (especially to young people). It tries to reaffirm the misguided American (and Canadian?) Dream–that anyone can be what he wants to be and do what he wants to do. And we know that isn’t always true. Countless humans have had to shelve their ambitions–sometimes permanently–for a variety of reasons.
I first noticed this in regard to Mike’s friend Gordon. He ran away from an abusive home and alcoholic parents and took a job as a gas-pump jockey. From there, he single-handedly built an enormously successful business (with no snafus whatsoever), married a lovely girl (Tracy) and raised two well-adjusted children. Even his parents stopped drinking and mended fences! To me, it seems unrealistic to achieve all that and not suffer psychological damage, especially considering his background.
Afterwards, I noticed the same thing with other characters, especially Mike, who zoomed to celebrity with his first book. Will his second one do as well? We never find out.
If anyone on this thread can name a character who was a true failure in life (I don’t mean people like Ted–obnoxious, but not a failure), please tell me. I’d love to know.

It’s a freakin’ comic strip. Get a life.
mroberts88 said, 23 days ago
susan, yes, that would be more realistic, but would you rather see that, or a successful family?
OpenWings said, 23 days ago
Wow….
Just…. wow.
Far out Susan001! :o|
I think that you would be a really interesting person to have around for dinner….

I’m with rtt470 - Susan, get a life and enjoy what you read…don’t tear it apart.

Evidently Susan, judging by your diatribe, you are the failure.

I think Susan001 has a point. I also think, though, that part of the charm and appeal of this strip is its encouraging take on life.
