Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

Alas! Space Guy is about to become Melted Boy Puddle… so created by his mothership’s finely tuned white hot laser beam of wrath and fury… stay tuned ;o)

Did anybody NOT see that coming?

It’s still better than spending two days making the costume by hand and then having him change his mind.

Exactly what I was thinking, ckcsmum. People will always change their mind. You just have to set the parameters up front (i.e. “This is it! I’m not buying/making anything else.)
Good morning, OpenWings, mroberts88, burgandy, susan and anyone else I’ve forgotten. OpenWings, to change your name temporarily, just modify your first and/or last name in your profile (maybe Batwings? and get a bat avatar?)

We’ve actually always made them – though this year is the last (they’re too old now). In all those years there was never a complaint. The only problem was when we went to a costume contest and lost – then the judge came up afterward and said their costumes would have won except prizes were only for homemade, and they assumed ours were store bought because they looked too professional. When we told him we made them, he apologized. Oh well.

Sorry Michael but you don’t have the option of changing your mind. This is the one we got and this is the one you will wear, that’s it!

I wonder how many other kids will be in Space Guy costumes.
I also wonder if the adult Michael ever reminisces about what a butt-pain he was as a kid.

We don’t really get to see why it is that Michael changed his mind in the parking lot only a few minutes after having purchased his costume, since this is an Elly-only perspective. I could easily imagine it being from fear of seeing his sister turn completely black in the final panel.
“Eek! Lizzie has a store bought costume and she turned completely black! …I’ve changed my mind!!!”
This way, all those exclamation points make sense.
As for Elly’s reaction, she gave into Mike on Sunday in the grocery store, and today she gave into Mike about getting the store bought costume. I predict the next thing Elly does will be to give into Mike, go back into the store and get Mike another costume, with the hope that this time he can make it to the car without changing his mind again.

At least it’s easier to take the costume back to the store and exchange, than to go to all the work to make a costume and have it rejected.

We used to get pieces for costumes at the thrift store. We did Tom Sawyer one year and he got athlete’s foot (which he’s been fighting ever since) from the work boots we bought for the costume. That put an end to that practice.

Um, depends on where you got it - those seasonal Halloween stores that pop up this time of year have firm “All Sales Final” policies.
One of my boys loves to make his own costume, the more obscure the better (think Caulfield in Frazz). There was one year where he had to explain himself a bunch of times during the school parade, so he changed his mind and went as a ninja for ToT that night (from stuff we had at home). But except for that one year, he has always thrived on the obscurity. The younger ones are coming over to the “home made is best” mindset. And since they’re still of an age to play dress up on occasion, I don’t even mind the “changed my mind for Halloween” episodes - we still get lots of use of the costumes and accessories.

Michael sure was a brat in his younger days. Time for Elly to mom up, sort him out and put him right.

Hey FrightenUp thanks so much for the tips! :o)
You’re probably right scottcpa but I first thought that was a Where the Wild Things Are costume!! :o))
Love your new look Boo! gundy2 cute ghost too! :o)
Geez, Elly could just wear her panel 4 face for Halloween and not have to wear a costume - she’d scare a lot of kids!!
