Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

And of course poor Elly will likely hear ‘Wright’ as right. That sounds like an impossible set of directions then!! :o)
But hey don’t fret… it’s Turtleneck Man to the rescue! :o)

I’d react just like Elly did. I would not ask that person to repeat their directions.

Hey, I do the same thing.

when i was in my 3rd year of university, we had frosh week t-shirts made up for those of us in the faculty who had volunteered to be available to help new students with directions and other information. they had the slogan “i;m approachable” printed on them, and turned out to be a pretty decent way to meet people as well as for the use they were intended.

Yup! I wear my “Ask Me” badge every September when new students are about – they do ask, I hope it helps!

Haha, OpenWings! Maybe he’s Mr. Wright(now). :-)

I’d ask the person to write down the directions because they lose me after the first one. I hope that nice man in the turtleneck will actually lead her there.
yyyguy and Steve, I’m glad you were available to help new people find where they were going.

I’m guessing that turtleneck man is the instructor.

In a world where university classroom buildings have information booths, atriums, and multiple-named wings; and where you can join a class in the middle of October comes Elly Patterson who, thanks to being so passive she is unable to ask a person to repeat their directions, coincidentally asks directions from Professor Smugtwerp, the teacher of her class. It’s moments like this which really make this comic strip for me. No one else in the comic strip world writes stuff like this.

Why do women always have to ask directions? It’s only a “university classroom buildings have information booths, atriums, and multiple-named wings”
Men don’t need to ask, we will find it on our own. If not today, then tomorrow. Or maybe next week. Hopefully. Or we don’t need it that bad.

In the week before I started my freshman year at university (many many years ago), I had dreams about being lost on campus and not knowing where my classes were.

Does the building have a Leff wing?
The Wright wing must have been named after a major donor to the University.

The bright side is that life experiences and emotions are fodder for creative writing.

So often when I ask for directions they are so complicated that there is no possible way for me to remember them. Do I ask them to repeat them, no; whereas my wife would and does.

I can sympathize with Elly, I am a senior, and I still get lost in some of these blasted buildings!

The good thing about my college, they hand out a map type thing that says where all the rooms and buildings are. I use it every new semester.
gushmatuch said, 29 days ago
well one thing after getting such wonderful directions she stopped again to ask a guy this time,,,,, ha! we all now about guys and directions…(don’t ask)
KimberlyT said, 29 days ago
They have a map at my University too. It’s a good thing because they always manage to build something new, or redo something in between semesters. I’m a Junior and I still get lost! :-P
mroberts88 said, 29 days ago
Kimberly T, yeah, those things come in handy.

A competent information desk has a stack of printed maps/building diagrams, and marks the sought-after location and the ‘you are here’ location with highlighter. Not Rocket Science.

I bet if Elly had a map of the campus, she’d STILL get lost.
I was summoned for jury duty last March, and the map included with the summons was totally inaccurate. I was late the first day, but luckily, they hadn’t taken roll call when I arrived.
Guess they knew that people would be late because of that damned map.

I would too! :/ I’m bad with maps, fine with directions, IF written down.
