Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

That, however, is sadly true. Women get to worry about being replaced because we’ve “let ourselves go” and are not permitted to look the way nature intended. Most of us are not gluttons or lazy; we’re just human.

c’mon girls, i don’t think either of you are fat, besides i’d rather cuddle up to a healthy lady rather than a bag of bones

Besides, who said that men are ALLOWED to go to pot? You think we don’t constantly get nagged about it by our wives/girlfriends/significant others?
Dial the ranting back a notch or twelve, Elly.

Who says a paunch is fine on a man? I’ve seen men with bellies that extend way over their belt lines.
Believe me, it’s not a pretty sight.

How old is Elly supposed to be now? Probably 30 or so so why is she referring to herself as a girl?
EarlWash said, about 1 month ago
Oh, probably for the same reasons we old geezers often refer ouselves as going out with the ‘boys’.

I always thought those waist measurements were age. When I was 32, I wore a 32 waist . Now that I’m, well never mind, you get the idea..

My husband and the men in his family like to show off their bellies- it’s a big joke. They joke about being pregnant with twins. Yes SILs with 7 and 10 kids, who cook constantly and make wonderful meals and desserts every night, are always trying to lose weight. I personally don’t care if I look skinny (and I do right now, but I only have 3 kids and they’re small) It’s true! (and I don’t want my husband to get diabetes or heart issues either)
Ranting over perceived injustices can be fun!

Fat Bottomed Girls By Queen
Are you gonna take me home tonight
Ah down beside that red firelight
Are you gonna let it all hang out
Fat bottomed girls
You make the rockin world go round
Hey I was just a skinny lad
Never knew no good from bad
But I knew life before I left my nursery
Left alone with big fat fanny
She was such a naughty nanny
Heap big woman you made a bad boy out of me
Hey hey!

It’s not a big belly, it’s a tool shed. Some of us just need a bigger shed.

I’m a man and I work hard to keep fit, despite aging.
My natural gray hair is chemically altered.
My lady friend is 7 years younger, and looks younger than that.
Hope I look at least half as good to her as she does to me.

Almost all men prefer women with a little “extra weight” on them. No guy I know likes a skinny girl (of any age). Girls are always hardest on them, it’s not men that demand they loose weight.
And I think men with a big paunch are most disgusting, but it’s ok on girls. (I am not talking about obese which is bad on anyone). I know because I had one before I lost 40 lbs of belly fat.
And I think Ellie looks sexy as she is! (She earned it!)

Vocabulary word of the day: sylph. It means a slender graceful woman or girl.

For those of you defending women’s “right” to be a bit overweight, check these heart healthy tables at
http://www.weightwatchers.com/health/asm/calc_healthyweight.aspx
Most likely, nearly all of you need to lose weight, as I do myself. I am an older man who is constantly fighting weight problems that most of you would think silly. I’m exactly at the top end of the healthy range, not good enough.

Despite my avatar, for health reasons I try to stay at an appropriate weight as does my wife. People think it’s natural to put on weight. Americans are among the most obese on earth. Look at school kids today. When I was young a fat child was a minority. It has seemed to become acceptable to look upon excess weight as natural. The heavier the person the bigger the chance for health issues. I would prefer to remain trim. It takes eating responsibly and getting a little exercise.

FBFFW is definitely a classic strip…but this one, to me, shows why it shouldn’t be in reruns. While true, a sentiment that was edgy and funny like this 20 years ago seems kind of tired and whiney now.
But then, at least it’s not Cathy, who is still having the same tired dilemmas in her current strip.

I agree with you cleokaya. Although I have had 2 kids and gained over 50 lbs with each pregnancy, I have lost it all and have a flat stomach (without surgery or pills or special diets). I’m certainly not model thin, although I have the height, but that’s okay because I’m at a normal weight. I keep myself healthy by exactly what everyone says – healthy food, exercise and not eating too much. I do have treats (chocolate!), and if I start gaining weight, I do something about it rather than sitting on the couch moaning about how “fat” I am.

Attention Hollywood ! Fat men are not attractive. Old & wrinkly is just as appealing on men as it is on women. If Hollywood was not dominated by older white men we would all get a different perspective.
BlitzMcD said, about 1 month ago
It’s okay for men to get fat? Excuse me?!
So it’s okay for men to ingest copious amounts of grease and salt and then get hypertension, diabetes or a stroke?
What a double standard.
Burgundy2 said, about 1 month ago
It’s not so much a double standard as a 2 way street.. Some women seem to think they need to be model slim be attractive, but, as a few men in this forum have indicated, many men prefer a woman with a bit of substance. I’m not talking fat, just something more than skeletal.
And many women I talk to don’t mind their men with a bit of extra weight - not so as to risk health, that’s different.
As far as Hollywood goes, I think emphasis should be put on acting ability more than good looks.

By the way, the commentary over at Yenny dovetails with this discussion quite well.

A term first coined by Paracelsus, who described sylphs as invisible elemental beings of the air.

Because this was back in the ’70s, when 80-year-old grandmothers were referred to as girls.

I don’t think Elly is in her 30’s I think she is in her mid to late 20’s. I was when my son hit first grade. I do believe that eating healthy and exercise is good, but a lot of food out there is quite deceiving. Unless you live in an area that has lots of variety of farmers market or a whole foods store, you are kinda of out of luck at finding good healthy food. And don’t get me started on how the healthier food is twice as expensive than the junk.
summerdog said, about 1 month ago
In Elly’s bio at FBORFW, it says that she was 24 when Michael was born. Lizzie was born when Mike was 4. That would make Elly 30 or 31 in this strip.

I always thought those waist measurements were age. When I was 32, I wore a 32 waist . Now that I’m, well never mind, you get the idea.
That’s why I subscribe to a variation on an old rule that I first learned from Joan Rivers: Never admit to being older than your waist size.
Of course, now that I’ve dropped over 20 lbs and lost a couple of inches, am working out five days a week and watching my diet (about the only thing that being a Type 2 diabetic has going for it is that it’s motivating me to get my body in shape in a way that vanity alone never could), I proudly admit to being 48 and loving it. In fact, seeing all the hot older men at the gym and elsewhere is now making me say, “Fifty? Bring it on!” :)
