Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

Ahhh….. there’s nothing quite like BLARPFFFFTTT as an expression that, in other words, simply says “Hey, I really, really like you!”
…..young love!!! Awwwwwww :o)

She must have been licking on a grape lollipop, which explains her purple tongue.

Did anybody else pick up on the boss asked her DAD if he wanted to manage a new hardware store and her MOM said, “Yes”…
Oi, it just occurred to me that if her mom wasn’t so controlling, she and Michael might not have married…

Deanna’s mom was a total control freak! I felt so sorry for her when she was planning her wedding and picking out her gown!

It was MOM that decided because it goes back to the First Fact of Life: If mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy!

Deanna gave a shortened version of the actual story.
She left out the part where her father told her mother about what his former boss asked him to do.
I see that some people who post comments to comics on this website sometimes jump to conclusions.
You folks also have to realize that even in Canada now, it is difficult to get a house on the market sold right away. If you were to watch HGTV programs about selling and buying homes you would know that.

Joe Allen Doty - Most of us don’t have the kind of time on our hands that it would appear that you do.

Joe, from that sentence that was given, I was under the impression that the mom had all the control.

Well said, Doctor Toon, well said.

Macushlalondra - thanks for the reminder. I’d lost track that the mother Deanna is talking about here is the nightmare that almost ruined her wedding.
Oh yeah, big time control freak.

Even a girl like Deanna can be a little boy-like sometimes. Amusing with the raspberry there.

“I wanted to be with my friends again,” which means you too Michael!! (in spite of the raspberry)

Yup, it seems to be young love……

Little did she know that she would marry Mike and bare a son and daughter with him

I’m with you johnnydoc5. The raspberry is not usually a sign of love. In this strip in particular, when a girl raspberries a boy, it means she is mad at him. For example, when adult Elizabeth raspberried Warren Blackwood for breaking their date; or Elly Patterson raspberried John Patterson for going to his convention without her; or the countless times when young Elizabeth and Michael raspberried each other. Those were not signs of affection.

aaawwww….love is in the air. blowing raspberries is all a matter of context. deanna is definitely crushing on michael ;-)
