Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

I am curious about a creative point: I wonder if Lynn had any idea of what would happen in the future with Mike and
Deanna.
I would like to think that their meeting again when they are in their 20’s and the subsequent romance and marriage was something that grew spontaneously as it happened or whether there was a hint of this in her mind as early as these strips as the two in grade school.
I guess like any relationship, it cannot be contrived and I don’t see Lynn setting things up like this so early in the lives of the strip and these two characters.
Anyway, it is great to see this old work in a very new light!
….and if I spoiled the plot for anyone, sooooorrrrryyyyy!

brewwitch - this is very loosely based on events that happened to her and her family - very very loosely … but it’s a good question … also, don’t forget, she’s ‘re-writing’ with 20/20 hindvision ;)

Carne asada burritos are worth any stomach symptoms.
I love the strip but this is not my favorite story arc. The joys of sending a man to a farmers market and getting not some veggies for dinner but enough apples for an army, I can understand– but romance in 1st grade? I can’t imagine most people have any symptoms before 6th/7th grade (or at least, they didn’t then before it was “pushed” on kids to do it younger fairly recently)

Oh come on, I think this is rather sweet. It sure beats the daily dose of “John is a male chauvinist pig and Elly is the poor put upon victim” we usually get.

Strangely enough, I turn into a little girl every time I try to ask a girl out …unless I’m going on a date for the sake of saying I’m going on a date and that I’m not socially inept, in which case the date is commonly short and effected in nature. If I don’t turn into a little girl, that means I wasn’t truly interested in the first place.

If each comic has a corresponding original, it would be so cool to have both shown on one page or running separately here! B-)

Like Charlie Brown, I had my little red-headed girl in first and second grade. I had a killer crush on her. Then my family moved way out in the ‘burbs and I never saw her again. Still think of her fondly from time to time.

My very first crush at 5 was when I saw on a black and white screen in the small town Grange Hall a pretty little curly hair girl dancing and singing in front of a picket fence. For those of you who are old enough, that was Shirley Temple.
That crush lasted nearly a whole year. Then we moved to Spokane and I met another pretty curly hair girl from 3 doors down. CRUSH!

brewwitch: go on over to Lynn’s website and ask her. fbofw.com
There’s a feature there “Ellie’s Coffee Talk Blog” that’s a forum like this one and occasionally Lynn will answer questions like yours.

Yeah, I had a crush on a girl at about that age. In fact mom let me name my sister after her. Sis is seven years younger than me so I guess I was around seven then.

Michael’s stomach must be getting more and more cocoons for each time he sees Deanna. Then they turned into butterflies on that one New Year’s party many years from “now.”

My first crush was in 2nd grade. I finally got the courage to talk to her on 8th grade graduation day. We dated for 20 months and suddenly I lost interest. But later my older brother picked up where I left off, then moved out of state.
She and I just happened to pick the same college to addend, but I hardly even noticed her during that time, an occasional “hello”. She disappeared after 2 years while I went on and graduated.
My brother got an email from her 30 years later after spotting his name and email in a tiny publication my dad and mom wrote on genealogy. She found it in the reference stacks at the library where she worked.
My brother sent the email to me and at first I didn’t want to respond. But then I did. I helped her out of some serious depression by showing her how to go beyond her situation and find bliss inside. Must have been a karmic debt.
Since then we’ve been spiritual brother and sister, corresponding regularly, and my brother can’t understand it. Of course, he doesn’t want to hear about bliss. You can’t teach older brothers much, especially if you’re 3rd.
Funny how life takes such fascinating twists. Better than most movies.

I had a childhood sweetheart in second grade. He was a very nice boy wit a very bad stammering problem. I think I may have been the only girl who was nice to him.
He overcame his stuttering, but I haven’t seen him in decades.
