Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

What’s Michael, 5 or 6? How old was she when Michael was born? Maybe Elly is just too old to remember things from her pre-kid days!

Ah, the joys of “baby brain” - you forget what you like to do, what you were doing 5 minutes ago, and sometimes even your own name.

I hate it when the clowns who destroy the business, set themselves up nicely before the *%@^ hits the fan while everybody else suffers!

Ejcapulet understands…. I have a 4 year old, 2 year old and 8 month old (we are done) and I haven’t “worked” in only 5 years after 8 years with the same company and X years in school, but I am lucky if I can remember my name, much less what I’d like to do when I grow up (I was doing work I mostly enjoyed, in a field I hated- so would have quit anyway- but starting up again will be a challenge!)

There were 20 years of these kinds of strips, before John Patterson bought Elly the Lilliput’s book store, and Elly Patterson finally achieved the goal she talks about here.

I’m surprised Elly made it to middle age, she worries about everything.

Hey, I want a challenging career in my field of interest, too!
Instead, I’ve settled for a boring job in a field that provides steady paychecks. It isn’t just Moms who put dreams on hold to raise kids.

i liked the work i did before retirement, but it was the supervision that ruined it for everyone.

I waited unfortunaely till my two where old enough took WATC to catch up. The sad part 1999 I was still in WATC employers could not get help then 2000 before WTC happened everything went bust. This year is even worse. State of Kansas next year for court houses, and I do not work there, will be mandartory furlough for each month 1 week no pay because of budget cuts. I’m pt with county.
I can understand Elly’s furstration and yelling out.

How could she have “too much education”? She has only one year, maybe two, of college - she’s a high school graduate. How many jobs advertise “only eighth grade graduates need apply”?

Hey, I want a challenging occupation in my life long field of dreams too, but that would probably cause me to get arrested.
Now let’s see, what was that? Oh, shucks, I don’t remember now. Oooooh welllll.

babysbybend - Hey kiddo, long ago and far away on a planet called earth High School Guidance Councillors told us chicks that “it’s a waste of time and money for you to even try to go to university. You’d only be going to meet your future husbands.”
I believed the s.o.b. and took courses that wound up being dead ends as far as higher education went. Tried picking up the courses required, all the sciences, maths & languages, but couldn’t stand the night school teachers who were only in it for the $. However, school of hard knocks worked quite well thank you.

Don’t aim low, Elly. Most who say, “I’ll start at the bottom just to get my foot in the door” usually end up staying at the bottom at that company.
For that matter, it’s scary how many good folks I run into in Ontario who have multiple degrees, yet are working in what is to them a very unsatisfying situation.
I think Bachman Turner Overdrive tried to warn us about that in the ’70s when they recorded “Blue Collar”….

As far as being “overqualified” for a job, I know that sometimes an employer will decline to hire someone whose resume shows way more qualifications than the job required (especially if they are in a different area) because they fear they’ll go to all the trouble to train the individual, just to have him or her leave in 4 months.

Open Wings - If I remember correctly, Elly met John in their 2nd year of college putting them at 20 or 21. They married a year later and Elly dropped out to get a job to help John pay for college. John Graduated at 22 or 23 and Micheal was born a year later at 23 or 24. That would put Elly at about 29 or 30.
This must be leading up to her going to night school to finish her English degree.

Thanks Wolfdreamer250 :-) I haven’t got a long history of reading FBoFW, so it helps to have a bit of background sometimes! Cheers.
