Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

The thought of a man changing seems to have stunned the loquacious Ted into silence…. Thank you John for that!!

OOOOOOOHHHH!!!! Can you imagine Elly’s reaction if she heard Ted? Methinks he would need the services of a fellow GP!

avolunteer, John ment his clothes not himself. If my wife says things like that to me I do it. Because stuff like that doesn’t matter to me. But if a man said the same thing to his wife he would be in trouble. Her friends would be saying what a jerk she is married to because she can’t even go outside without him complaining about how she dresses

That’s right, and I think long marriages like mine is beginning to be is based a lot on this and compromise. I think Elly should leave John alone about the shirt since he was only going out to fix the fence. If he wanted to wear that outfit in public (especially if I was with him) it would be different.
Ted as usual is a j-a-c-k-a-s-s.

My wife often says, “I hope you’re not going to go out wearing THAT!”
Then she asks me, “Does this purse look OK with these shoes?” Or “Which earrings should I wear with this?”
I have wisecrack answers for the first (but of course I always change), but I’m forced to invent an opinion for the second even though I don’t know what I’m talking about.
There is something going on there. I haven’t quite figured out what it is. It’s sort of fun, but scary, too.

The most important words for a man to know ” Yes Dear ” LOL

I never told my ex what to wear, not that I can remember–in fact the only person I said it to was a dear friend with a bad (red) sunburn who wanted to wear a yellow green shirt. I thought it really looked badly and I told him that. Mostly I don’t question anyone’s clothes, since I dress for myself 90% of the time. :)

Ray C, the reason your wife is asking you is most likely because she wants you to like how she looks. By including you in choosing her accessories she’s trying to make sure that you think she looks nice.

I do what Mrs. Goaler tells me to do… because she’s most often RIGHT!!!!!
We’ve been using “Yes, Dear” as a signal to each other for 28 years now… it must be working! ;-)

A good example of what men do not talk about when they’re relaxing with friends in a bar.

My ex only told me what to wear if I a) asked, or b) she was going out in public with me, lol. Around the house or working outside she didn’t really care, and I am sure SOME of the things I did wear were an emberisment. I do agree though pick your fights and you will mostly end up a happier person, LOL

ejcapulet: Very encouraging. I think you may be right.
As to what I wear, she feels somewhat responsible. Thus, even if I’m just going to work she wants me to look good, feeling that it reflects on her.
When a news anchor wears the wrong tie or a shirt that doesn’t go with the coat, she says, “Doesn’t that man have a wife?” She’s not blaming the man for not knowing how to dress, she’s blaming his wife for not setting him straight.
Women are fearfully and wonderfully made!

If a wife tells her husband how to dress he has been downgraded from husband to accessory.
lfanterickson said, 3 months ago
JanCin, I agree wholeheartedly! My husband and I do that, too. I also agree that Elly shouldn’t have bugged Jon about what to wear to paint the fence. After all, he probably got paint on it, so taking it from the “wear me in public” drawer!
kjhesser said, 3 months ago
I thought Elly was silly getting annoyed at what he was going to wear to fix the fence but regarding some peoples comments about being insulted if your spouse wanted to help you look your best, pleeeze! If you can’t trust your beloved to want what is best for you than you should just be single, like Ted, go live with mommy.

One of the toughest people I’ve ever known was my martial arts instructor. He held three black belts and was a member of The Special Response team of the county police force. After a class one day I asked him would it be okay for a private lesson in two weeks to which he pointed to his wife and said: “It’s okay if ‘the boss’ says it’s okay.”
