Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

I LOVE Farley’s facial expressions in the first 4 panels.
1 - Hey Momma! Look what I did!
2 - Woot oh … she’s got that evil hair pulling thing!
3 - Augh! it bothers!
4 - Is the mad woman done yet?

We are soooo lucky to live in the country ~ that’s where big, hairy dogs flourish ~ Farley does well in the city but a black lab would go bonkers!

koskid - Yup, relatives of mine who live in the Phoenix area, just got a lab puppy and immediately I thought, what lab is going to be happy in Phoenix? It is hot, with very few places to go for a refreshing swim and no place to roam.

If you don’t want to be brushing the dog everyday, get a more low maintenance type of dog. English Sheep Dogs need lots of grooming to look their best. A big chore for this busy family.

Between Elly coming with the brush at the dog and Elly’s swearing neighbour, there is a lot of anger in this strip. I don’t think I have seen a strip that had one of Elly’s friends swearing at her before.

Use the vaccum cleaner to collect those shedding hair!
Burgundy2 said, 3 months ago
I imagine Elly was letting the dog hair fly thinking some birds might use if for their nest. We once found a hummingbird nest that was very thickly lined with our dog’s hair.

Oops…Not sure why she would put it over the fence though! D-oh!

Solar-powered clothes-drying: good.
Responsible pet care: good.
Forgetting to peek over the fence first: not so good.
Everybody lives downstream. And downwind.

Dang wind indeed, ladywolf17. Dang wind indeed.
Elly should’ve done it inside and got rid of Farley’s clumps in the garbage can.
It’s a good thing I’ve never owned a dog in my life. When I brushed my ex-boss’s Pekingese (I wasn’t fired, by the way, I was laid-off), I wasn’t sure if I did a good job. So I’d have to do it again until I’ve gotten the unwanted loose fur off of the little guy.

@joyce71 i am horrified! do you mean that elly should put farley in the dryer? he would clog it completely and it would never work again! :oD

Haha, the same thing happened to me last night when I was brushing my Sheltie. Well, the neighbors didn’t have their laundry out, but I was watching all that hair blow over the fence and thinking “oops, hope they don’t notice the hairballs in their backyard.”

My daughter has a golden retriver and brushes the dog outside I think she throws away the extra fur. Our cat sheds a lot too. Hot weather.

@Andij- I’m sure Ellie didn’t think about where the wind would blow it.
And birds do love to use fur for their nests. I would too1 It would be warm.
