Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

I agree. I have two children and a cat. I am my children’s Mummy; I am not the cat’s. I did not give birth to the cat. We actually refer to ourselves (in relation to the cat) as “his guy” and “his lady.” Which makes us sound more like his servants than his parents, but that’s fine.

Well, if John is going to speak so incomprehensibly, maybe Farley shouldn’t do everything he says.

My sister-in-law refuses to be “mom” to their dog (What are mother dogs called??? .. Right …b!tches!) I don’t mind being “Mom” to my cats… (what are mother cats called??? queens!)
I don’t see anything incomprehensible in what John says, he was speaking quite clearly. (much more clearly than baby talk!)
These are not old FBFW strips. Go to Lynne’s website; she has started back in the beginning time wise and drawing wise to take some of the pressure of doing a too well drawn strip with too many story lines.

I call myself my cats’ master and they are my loyal and devoted slaves. I know I’m a dreamer!

Avolunteer. WRT your comment, “These are not old FBFW strips.” Today’s strip is a reprint from 1980 and can be found in the collection book called “Is This “One of Those Days,” Daddy?”. Since September, 2008, Lynn Johnston does about 50% new material and 50% reprints, with all the stories set during the time period of the reprints.

farly doesn’t realize it yet but they aremaking him go to obedience school
trust me folks, that school doesn’t work for all dogs, my step daughter got a refund when they couldn’t train her rottie.

wolfbyte - Would that perhaps be one of the birds?

Its great to see Farly as a youngster. Usually the furry friends are easier to train than their human companions… not something everyone realizes.

I never let my dog call me daddy. It is so embarassing out in public. I insist he call me Mister.

I used to call Gypsy, my dear beloved cat, “my baby!” If I get another cat, I will love to call new cat, “my baby!” :-)

I think if John has Farley in his office, then Farley should call John by the term “Doctor” or “Doctor Patterson” or maybe “Dr. P”. However that last one may be too familiar.

Personally, I love FBoFW. Lynn shared her amazing talents when the strip unfolded originally…and is doing the same with the do-over’s.
I do refer to myself as my dog & cat’s “mother”..however, I have enough common sense to know that I didn’t give birth to them—but I sure did care for them as youngsters & form an amazing human/animal bond.
My pets are parts of our family.

NotNorman Tell me please. What strip are you reading?
eatteaphonenome said, 5 months ago
In the past week we’ve had Elly decide her husband and her children are not humans and now John insists that the dog call him by his first name. Time for social services to take Michael and Liz away and send John and Elly to a special room with rubber wallpaper.

If this is the worst thing that happens to Elly’s kids, I think they will probably survive.

Not Norman Chubsy Ubsy it’s about time you stopped reading comics since all you do is pick them apart. You’re a worse whiner than Elly ever was.
serenasakitty said, 5 months ago
NotNorman I was just wondering because sometimes your comments do not seem to have much connection to the strip I’m reading. I thought maybe your computer was showing something different. She is not whining about anything and she is seldom drawn screaming irrationally. Most of these strips are reprinted and there is not much difference from the original.

I don’t remember the originals being nearly as bitter in tone as these re-runs.

Time for Elly to scream irrationally at John.
You are obsessed with that phrase. This is a comic. You need to get your own woman to scream at YOU. Maybe then you will feel better.
