Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

Yikes! I bet Elly would scream about those dirty all over the carpet floor and that door, too!

And maybe we still live in teepees and igloos, and don’t have running water. Please, please, I hope you were joking. We’re not under the equator where the seasons are reversed (and if we were, it would be winter now, not spring).
At the risk of repeating what many, many people have said, Lynn has re-started the strip from the beginning, and as such, the strips do not match actual time anymore.

Technically, it is still Spring. Eventhough, I’ve never been to Canada, they are slightly behind us. When the weather is getting warmer here, I notice they still have snow..

arsmall typed “technically it is still spring” in response to gmartin’s “it is only about a week from summer”–on the nail!

In Canada, springtime is one morning in August. Summer comes along later that same day. Fall comes the next day and winter sets in again the end of that week.

It depends on where you live in Canada. In London Ontario the weather is no different from where I used to live in Michigan. Further north it probably is still pretty cold.
As for Elly, she needs to teach the kids to wipe their feet at the door but there doesn’t seem to be a mat for that purpose.

Macushlalondra :
no matter how many times we tell the kids to wipe their feet at the door they rarely do it, so we have them come in through the back and set a shoe tray in there and we all take out shoes off before coming in

Did she change the words on the old strips? I started reading about the time Farley died. The older ones she has been putting up Ely seems to be bitter and resentfull of her life and of the kids and John. There is not a happy under tone to these strips. I understand ever once in awhile a strip about a messy house or being stuck at home but every one of these strips she is not happy. I raised five kids several dog and a uncountable number of Guinna Pigs and my memoiries a happy ones.

Elly/Lynn unhappyy now as she rewrites old strips? Maybe she is seeing her life through a different eye now that she is divorced from her husband, who left her for another woman.
howtheduck said, 5 months ago
imrobert I think you’re right. In response to fbjsr. I have compared the original comic strips in the first collection book to the ones being reprinted. I noticed she is selectively reprinting. For example, the recent storyline about John Patterson going to his dental convention, did not reprint the comic strip which showed John thanking Elly for being understanding as she saw him off at the airport, nor did it reprint a comic strip where Michael Patterson talked about how much he missed his father, and how a father made a family complete. Both those strips had happier undertones than the new one Lynn Johnston inserted, where Elly raspberried John after he left for his convention.

Depends where you are in Canada. Don’t clump the whole huge country into 1. We had lovely warm weather on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia when Edmonton had snow. The snow is gone from all parts of Canada now I’m certain. It was a nasty Winter everywhere, world wide, though.

It’s hard to be a nice person when you spend ALL your time at home with little kids and a dog. Look how hard it was for her to go out only ONE evening - she just couldn’t believe she could handle it. Being irrational is a normal reaction to being isolated.
Maybe she’ll be nicer when she starts working, and has somewhat of a life of her own…

I think it is best to remember that this strip, this time around, is going to be different than the old strip. This time, it’s just for a laugh of the day. Everything will be exaggerated, including Elly’s reactions. It’s just for the laughs. More traditional comic, not soap opera story.

Hey Chubsy - are you Lynn’s ex? That’s the only reason I can see for the annoying vitriol you spew. It’s a comic. Don’t like it, don’t read it.

Not Norman is like this in all his comments. You should see him over at Gasoline Alley when a storyline goes on too long for him. He never says anything positive.

the 4 seasons: Canadian version (an old joke I feel an irrational need to share)
almost winter, winter, still winter, & road construction
having said that, i’ll be on the golf course tomorrow - part of our 6 month golf season in the greater toronto area. i was still playing (on grass) in early november a couple of years ago, and usually can start swinging the clubs in april. weather is just fine.
