Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

This could be used as a training manual; vets could ask us what Elly is doing wrong.

A good squirt from the hose does wonders.

Or find out what he’s barking at. He’s not looking at her, so he’s probably not just asking for her attention.

Was that the 9 am barking? You know, news for dogs. I remember this from 101 Dalmations. He does have to pass it on.

Someone yelling “Be quiet!!” is really annoying, especially in the middle of the night.

I could not stand that stupidest dogs barking for no reasons during the daytime and nighttime. Sighhh! The owner didn’t care about the dogs barking outside. That is barking nuisance!

Why do people get dogs for protection and then holler at them when the poor ignorant thing barks??????

Before too many people say “stupid dog” remember this comic is based on her life. This is the stupid dog that later saves her daughters life. Yukoneric is right, my cop friends tell me that they hear all the time “my car must have got broken into about 1 because I had to tell the dog to be quite about then”.

A dog “for protection” that barks every time another dog 3 blocks away barks is useless.

first if the dog is stupid look at the owners they are the ones that trained the dog second the dog is just doing what he should protecting his yard so you tell him good boy thats enough and then distract him

The first rule of training a dog is; You must be smarter than the dog.

Farley was trying to tell you there’s a Stranger on the other side of the fence

I don’t own a dog, but I study animal behavior enough to know that a dog barks for at least two reasons:A/ To communicate something or announce the presense of an “object of interest”, or B/ They have been tied up or locked up alone and they bark for attention.
Farley could be doing both. He may be barking at the scent of a cat on the other side of the fence. But by the seventh panel, he may be barking because he loves to watch Ellie’s reaction.
Same with my cat. He’s trained me to come running at the sound of scratching- because he KNOWS that I think he’s really wrecking the furniture. You should see the smug look on his face when I discover once again that he is bluffing! Just his paw up on the couch is enough to make me go to him now. I know when I’m being summoned!!!
