   I agree with bald. She will play that game now because she sees she’s getting a lot of attention for it. Maybe you need to replace the doorknob with one that doesn’t lock.

   Those push button bathroom locks have a release on the out side knob, even the old ones from the 70’s. Look for a small whole in the middle of the knob, stick something small and pointed into it and press till you hear a click. Door opened from the outside, child saved with little fuss. If you don’t have this type of doorknob and have kids, well, get one.

   Indeed, summerdog. There are different kinds of doorknobs available. Knobs for closet doors don’t turn. Knobs for passageway doors don’t lock. What you describe is a “privacy lock” – easy to release if locked by mistake. Of course, there are the security locks that require a key.

   Anyone remember that story about when Anne Sullivan arrived at the Keller’s to teach Helen? (1887). Locks in those days could be worked from either side of the door. Helen locked Anne in a 2nd story room, and hid the key. Captain Keller had to rescue Anne with a ladder.

   Yes, I do remember the movie about Helen Keller, the blind and deaf child. Helen did lock Anne in the room and hid the key. Oh my gracious! The movie was amazing and true story about Helen Keller.

    that acutally would be funny, If my 7 year old cousin did not get stuck in a bathroom (on toilet only kind) at dunkin donuts. The machanism failed and she was stuck in there for an hour. The manager did not do anything about it and could careless except for making money. It took the police and fire department to get her out. So until Further notice I am not going to any dunkin doughnuts becuase of the lousy attitude of the manager who cares nothing about children and their scared to death parents.

    Even though we had the type of knob summerdog talked about, it wasn’t always easy to find something small enough to fit in the hole, and long & strong enough to release the locking mechanism. Having a 1/2 bath with no window, attached directly to our toddler’s room, we were afraid he’d lock himself in, so we switched the knob around so the lock was on the outside, instead of the inside. One time though, when he was potty-training, my husband had to take him there, while I was busy with entertaining/cooking for our guests. Our son pushed the lock before he & daddy went in the bathroom, and one of them closed the door behind them. With the extra noise in the house, due to guests, it was a little while before my hubby could get my attention to let them out of the bathroom. Thank goodness it happened when I was also at home - if it had been just the two of them in the house at the time, it would have been a long wait for help.

    Wooden skewers work very well. Stick it in the hole in the door knob, and you can feel a small plate move, then turn the knob at the same time, and voila! Open door.
