A three panel summary of George Carlin’s 7 words you can’t say on TV: “There’s no bad words, only bad thoughts.”

I agree with the George Carlin summary, they are just words. Who got to pick what were bads words? Seems like whoever it was had their minds in the gutter. LOL

Well Vamptoo, one does have to be careful with words due to context and/or recipients thereof.

Anyone familiar with the comic strip King Kat? I can remember a Saturday (in Calgary Herald prior to it starting a Sunday-print edition) where King Kat complained about how easily a certain four-letter word was allowed to be used–the word in question was revealed (in the final panel) to be “VETS” (veterinarians).

You’ll find out soon enough what they mean Michael and then you’ll know why they’re offensive.

Now there’s a name I haven’t thought of in years.

Thanks, bald! Loved Dobie Gillis. Anyone know if it’s shown in re-runs anywhere?

When you get old enough to look them up in the dictionary, you wonder even more.

Most profanity centers around the contents of your knickers and what you do with said contents, so it is indeed vulgar, lewd, crass, common, etc to talk about them in anything but a medical or intimate setting, and even then there are more appropriate words that are employed. For the most part, those words are used when you DESIRE to be inapropiate and/or ill-mannered.

summerdog, does your cable packet include Nickelodeon or TVLand? These do show Dobie reruns.

prasrinivara, (try typing THAT ten times, fast)
We do have TVLAND. I’ll keep an eye out for it. Thanks.
And get the Ivory out for doctortoon!

summerdog, I don’t have any Ivory–but I do have some of Indian brands Margo (named due to being made with neem oil) and Cinthol.

BTW, there was some incongruity in King Kat (a stray cat superficially resembling Garfield and Heathcliff) having issues about “VETS”–where would he have encountered one?

Who is actually drawing this strip? I have the original compilation books and this isn’t Lynn’s original style

When the words are said in anger or a demeaning way, that’s what makes them offensive. When they are used casually as an adjective, verb, noun, that just reveals the users’ stupidity.

Bill Wa, style changes over the years, just look at the old Garfield strips and compare them to the recent ones.
