Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

Guess WHO is becoming inane, repetitive drivel, sweetheart. With a TV addiction and a weight problem. She’ll look like Perfesser Fishawk in six months.

She needs to have more kids to keep her busy.

Aren’t most comic strips that are family orientated… Soap comics?

Serial comics are about the same a soaps but they don’t waste an hour of time each.

But 1 hour a day is some needed ‘me’ time - even if there is a munchkin playing in the room.

For those of you who mentioned Dark Shadows: I also watched Dark Shadows as a kid and got rehooked on it again when they showed the reruns starting in 1996. There are a lot of people still hooked on it through the dvd’s (what other “soap” has been released in it’s entirety on DVD?) I own a yahoo group called Dark Shadows Forever. We discuss the storylines, actors, characters and have a lot of fun. Not bad for a show that is 43 years old.

Turn off the boob-tube and curl up with a good book.

Or, walk Farley during the time the slops are on! Exercise gotten both for Farley and yourself…it solves both problems you mentioned, Elly!

Elly looks so worrisome about her soap opera on the TV without commercial interrupts. Sigh! Good grief!

Joe - it’s ORIENTED. Not ORIENTATED. For the love of the English language! (or whatever is left of it after Textspeak and gangsta rap has gotten through with it.)

My ex taped As The World Turns every day. I watched it with her and even kind of got into it for a while. What really turned me away is that no one is ever allowed to be happy for long. Happy people aren’t interesting.

Soaps are a wast of time

I got hooked on Dark Shadows when it used to be on the SciFi Channel. It was fun to watch an episode that had been televised “live” and you could see mistakes. One time they came back from commercial and Barnabas and 2 other characters had their scripts in their hands!! LOL! Then SciFi stopped showing it! However a friend told me I could rent the tapes. Never did finish all of them because the store I could rent them from closed. And BTW the Chiller channel showed all of the episodes (2 weekends ago) of the remake for prime time Dark Shadows, too bad it didn’t last.

Meerkat Manor was a great soap opera. You can still watch the reruns of Flower and her gang.
Ugly Betty is a soap opera. Army Wives is, too.

That’ll happen in 10 years or so

Back when the soaps were 15 min. long,on the days she was not home,(remember stay at home Moms?) my mother would have me walk the mile+ from school (at lunch time) to watch and report on her favorite programs. Then quick back to school. In the 15min. there was probably 30 sec of material that was not in the program the day before or the day after. You could miss weeks and never lose the thread.

Ewen, you’re really going to slam someone’s English skills on a typo when you can’t be arsed to use the proper conjugation of “to have”?
