Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

Mom doesn’t have a belt so it looks like a hairbrush on the ol’ noggin.

And why hasn’t she taught this kid to leave the bathroom door alone when he knows someone else is in there? He’s old enough to know better.

@ejcapulet : That is a lesson that both my sons and husband conveniently forget when they need something.

Hopefully Michael will learn what NOT to say before he gets married.

Like father, like son.
Hoof and mouth disease must start young in this family.
And, when I first saw this one, my first thought was…they put the wrong comic here! Till I realized it was supposed to be Elly.

Michael, get used to it. Whenever your mommy is doing with her make-ups in the bathroom alone, she wants to be very generous for your daddy.

It looks like she has a hairy shoulder in the first panel.
There’s a dead plant in the bathroom and the paper at the toilet roll is in the “under” position.

Very observant,summerdog.

people who have little children put the roll under to make it a little harder for those fingers from unrolling the paper and making streamers around the house

Meanie! That’s pretty harsh.
