Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

Even in those fairly close fitting duds Elly manages to look frumpy.

Gweedo…I guess having kids kinda drags down all a woman’s soft body parts!

Elly! Don’t feel silly or idiot about the exercising outfits. Whenever you wear them, you can do the walking to keep up with your good health.

Workout + light-colored exercise clothing = sweat marks in embarassing places.

Why should she look like an idiot to be walking in those clothes? Walking is probably as good exercise as running, it helped me lose weight!

Elly doesn’t look frumpy in panel 3!

Her slender figure shows good in panel 3. My earlier reference was on first glance of panel 2. My memory of the old strips has me thinking how she was always plain Janeish which is what I’ll probably wind up with as I am NOT a Buns of Steel guy myself.
