Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

Big strong men who aren’t afraid of anything are afraid of the dentist, they don’t like pain.

I’m not a big man or a man at all for that matter, but I feel the same way at the dentist.

OK, I admit that I’m a Mrs. Fuddmulch. I just had an old molar pulled. I was really scared that it would hurt. I didn’t know the oral dental surgeon at all, but I do know John Patterson DDS. I pretended that my dentist was John. Hey, it got me through it, and I needed some courage no matter where I dug it up from. By the way, it didn’t hurt, but I was full of Novacain (a really great invention) that didn’t wear off for 4 hours. I think that this comic today, shows us that Lynn has a good sense of what people really think and are really like.
