    Whenever a waitress/hostess tells me to sit where ever I want to I.m allways tempted to do something like the above.

    That’s a real difference between American and English culture and continental friendliness. In French relais routiers (truck-stops), strangers are encouraged and welcomed onto your table. In the US and UK – don’t infringe upon my personal space.

    In Germany a waiter/waitress may come up to your table and ask ist heir frei? if you respond ja you have a lunch guest at your table.
